EMMA JANE CONLEY, daughter of JOHN SMITH CONLEY and AMERICA BELLE HILDERBRAND, was born May 9, 1888 in Carter County, Kentucky, died in February of 1973 in Hagerstown, Wayne County, Indiana, and is buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Hagerstown, Wayne County, Indiana. She married ROSS EDWIN DAVENPORT about 1907. He was born July 17, 1875 in Ohio, died in 1933, and is buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Hagerstown, Wayne County, Indiana.

Notes: The fact that Emma Conley married Ross Davenport is based entirely on circumstancial evidence using the census reports. According to the book "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society (page 527), Emma J. Conley was born May 9, 1988 in Carter County, and married a man by the name of Davenport, who's first name wasn't known when the book was published in 1984. The last time we see Emma living with her parents in the census reports is in 1900. A search of the census reports in 1910, 1920 and 1930 for an Emma Davenport who was born about 1888 in Kentucky brings up only one that is a close match and that is the Emma who is married to a Ross Davenport from Ohio. This Emma is born in Kentucky as are her parents and will be listed here as the daughter of John Smith Conley and America Belle Hilderbrand until proven otherwise.

When Ross Edwin Davenport's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Cambridge City, Wayne County, Indiana, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Hagerstown, Wayne County, that his closest relative was Emma Jane Davenport of Hagerstown, and that he was born July 17, 1875. He was found to be short and stout, and he had gray eyes and brown hair.

Information found on findagrave.com and photos of their headstones shows that Emma J. Davenport lived from 1888 to 1973, and was buried in Section 8 in West Lawn Cemetery in Hagerstown, Wayne County, Indiana, and that Ross E. Davenport lived from 1875 to 1933 and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Emma Davenport was born May 9, 1888, and died in February of 1973. She received her Social Security card in 1966 in Indiana, and her last place of residence was in Hagerstown, Wayne County, Indiana.

Also listed are Emma (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, 1st marriage, she's given birth to 1 child and that child is still living, age 20), and Guy (son, born in Indiana, age 1).

On page 15 of the 1920 census for District 152 (Jefferson) in Wayne County, Indiana (dated January 21 & 22, 1920), Ross E. Davenport is listed as the head of the household for house #204, he's a farmer, born in Ohio, parents born in Ohio, and he's 44 years old. Also listed are Emma J. (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, age 31), Guy E. (son, born in Indiana, age 10), Gertrude G. (daughter, born in Indiana, age 7 years 6 months), and Virgil E. (son, born in Indiana, age 8 months).

On page 13 of the 1930 census for District 88-18 (Hagerstown) in Wayne County, Indiana (dated April 10, 1930), Ross Davenport is listed as the head of the household for house #176, he's a manager of a produce company, born in Ohio, parents born in Ohio, first married at age 30, and he's 53 years old. Also listed are Emma (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, first married at 18, age 41), Guy E. (son, produce buyer for a produce company, born in Indiana, age 21), Gertrude (daughter, born in Indiana, age 17), and Virgil E. (son, born in Indiana, age 10).

On page 24 of the 1940 census for District 88-19 (Hagerstown) in Wayne County, Indiana (dated April 16, 1940), Harry Stoltz is listed as the head of the household for house #296, he's single, not working, born in Indiana, he's living in the same place that he was in 1935, he has 3 years of high school, and he's 69 years old. Also listed are Emma Davenport (lodger, widowed, not working, born in Kentucky, she's living in the same place that she was in 1935, 8th grade education, age 50), and Virgil Davenport (son of Emma, separated, not working, born in Indiana, he's living in the same place that he was in 1935, 4 years of high school, age 20).

Davenport lived from 1909 to 1973, and was buried in Section 8 in West Lawn Cemetery in Hagerstown, Wayne County, Indiana, and that Frances I. Davenport lived from 1908 to 2005, and was buried in the same cemetery.
