JOHANNES HONEGGER, son of BASHCI HONEGGER and ANNELIS ZUR LINDE, was born about 1560 in Ruti, Zurich, Switzerland, and died in Ruti, Zurich, Switzerland. He married ELSBETH SCHMID about 1626.

Notes: When four of Johannes' (pronounced Yo-hahn) brothers died of the plague in the late 1620's and early 1630's, he took five of their children into his home and raised them. In addition, he had his widowed mother in his home for at least six years. (This information is taken from the book "Hans Jacob Honegger- From Switzerland to America" by Nadine W. Larsen.)

The children of JOHANNAS HONEGGER and ELZBETH SCHMID are:

MARX HONEGGER, son of JOHANNES HONEGGER and ELSBETH SCHMID, was born February 21, 1644 in Ruti, Zurich, Switzerland, and died in Ruti, Zurich, Switzerland. He married (1) MARIA KNECHT, daughter of JOSS KNECHT and ELSBETH GRAF, on December 9, 1666 in Ruti, Zurich, Switzerland. She was born December 6, 1646 in Hinwil, Zurich, Switzerland, and died about 1678 in Zurich, Switzerland. He married (2) CATHARINA LUTZ, daughter of JAGGLI LUTZ and LISABETH STASSEL, January 15, 1680 in Zurich, Switzerland. She was born May 2, 1658 in Hinwil, Zurich, Switzerland.

Notes: Marx Honegger and Catharina Lutz had two daughters of the same name. The first Regula Honegger possibly died because she was born prematurely. It was customary for the Swiss to name a later child after one who had died.

Marx Honegger was a Lieutenant, city treasurer, and an innkeeper. (This information is taken from the book "Hans Jacob Honegger- From Switzerland to America" by Nadine W. Larsen.)

DIETTAEGEN HONEGGER, son of MARX HONEGGER and MARIA KNECHT, was born July 12, 1668 in Ruti, Zurich, Switzerland, and died in Ruti, Zurich, Switzerland. He married ANNA HOTZ, daughter of HANS ULRICH HOTZ and CATHARINA KUENZ, July 9, 1689, Hinwil, Zurich, Switzerland. She was born February 21, 1661 in Durnten, Zurich, Switzerland.

Notes: When Diettaegen Honegger was 2 years old he was taken to Hinwil to live with his grandfather while his parents went off to war. His Aunt Elsbeth Honegger, who was 20 years old, was also living in that household in 1670. Sometime after 1674 his parents returned, and Diettaegen was reunited with his family.

Diettaegen was an innkeeper. He probably inherited the inn from his father Marx Honegger. (This information is taken from the book "Hans Jacob Honegger- From Switzerland to America" by Nadine W. Larsen.)

The children of DIETTAEGEN HONEGGER and ANNA HOTZ are:

    1. HANS JACOB HONEGGER, b. September 14, 1690, Hinwil, Zurich, Switzerland, d. 1737, Zurich, Switzerland.

HANS JACOB HONAKER, son of HANS JACOB HONEGGER and ELSBETH BOSSHART, was born July 24, 1718 in Hinwil, Zurich, Switzerland, and died May 10, 1796 in Wythe County, Virginia. He married (1) ANNA BLEYER, daughter of HANS HEINRICH BLEYER and REGULA AMMANN, June 20, 1747 in Prattein, Baselland, Switzerland. She was born February 19, 1726 in Zollikon, Zurich, Switzerland, died in 1749 aboard H.M.S. Crown, and was buried in the Atlantic Ocean. He married (2) MARIA GOETZ, July 8, 1753 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was born about 1718 in Switzerland and died about 1805 in Wythe County, Virginia.

Notes: Honaker is the Americanized version of Honegger.

Hans Jacob Honegger was a carpenter who was having a hard time making a living in Switzerland and reports were coming in from America that were very favorable. There was quite a rush of people heading for the New World and hopeful prosperity. It's not known exactly when he decided to migrate but sometime before he was 30 he moved to Basel, Switzerland, which was the main stop-off for people from Zurich to go on their way to America.

On June 20, 1747, Hans Jacob Honegger married Anna Bleylor in Pratteln, Switzerland. 10 months later they had a baby boy and named him Hans Jacob Honegger. Hans Sr. applied to emigrate but the government process was slow. He was finally allowed to go and about May 8, 1749, they left for America.

These voyages were very rough and the conditions were deplorable. The food was scarce and what they did get wasn't very good. There were maybe three warm meals a week served. There was a constant stench throughout the ship. Anna and their son didn't survive the crossing of the Atlantic and were buried at sea along with many others. The cost of the voyage from Switzerland to America was about 16 pounds per person. If a person didn't have the money to pay for the trip they made deals to work off the debt once they arrived at their destination. It took about four years to work off this debt once they were in America. If a passenger died over halfway across the Atlantic, the other family members on the journey had to pay or owed that debt as well. It is assumed that the child didn't make it halfway and Anna did.

Hans Jacob Honegger arrived on H.M.S. Crown in Philadelphia on August 30, 1749, nearly 4 months after the voyage began. He arrived with no money and this is how he began his new life in America. The ship's passengers were not allowed to leave the ship until they were purchased as servants, with the exception of signing the oath of allegiance. This was required of all immigrant males over 16 years of age. Hans Jacob Honegger signed this on the day that he arrived.

And so Hans Jacob Honaker became an indentured servant in Philadelphia. His basic needs were provided by his master, but he had very few privileges. He couldn't buy or sell anything without permission, he couldn't marry without his master's consent, and he couldn't vote. When his indentured contract was over, he was given freedom dues. In 1750 Pennsylvania those dues were a horse and a suit of clothes.

Since Hans Jacob married Maria Goetz a little before he had been in America for four years, it is likely that he had his master's permission. It is also possible that he still was indentured another 4 years to pay for Anna's voyage. (This information is taken from "Hans Jacob Honegger- From Switzerland to America" by Nadine W. Larsen.)
