      His obituary:
"Robert F. (Bob) Smith, 91, formerly of Oak Ridge, TN crossed the boundary between earthly living and eternity on January 6, 2012 to dwell with the Angels. He was born December 13, 1920 at Jeptha, KY which is in the eastern end of Morgan Co. He graduated from Crockett High School and Morehead State U. of Morehead, KY with a B.S. Degree in physics and mathematics. Soon thereafter, he accepted a job at Columbia University, working on a pilot project to design the first Gaseous Diffusion Plant for separating the fissionable U 235 isotope of uranium from non-fissionable ones. When construction of the Gaseous Diffusion Plant got underway in Oak Ridge, TN, he transferred there in 1944 after 14 months at Columbia. Union Carbide Corp. operated the Oak Ridge plant and Bob worked in the Analytical Laboratory where mass spectrometers were used to measure uranium isotopes.
"A few years after the Atomic Bomb ended World War II, the government decided to build two additional Gaseous Diffusion Plants to enrich U 235 for power reactor fuel; one near Paducah, KY and the other in southeastern Ohio. Bob transferred to the Paducah plant in 1952 when construction got underway. He went there as Isotopic Lab Dept. Head and considered himself fortunate to spend his entire 41 year working life with Union Carbide Corp.
"Bob has enjoyed his lifelong recreational activities. His active or participating sport was hunting and fishing. He hunted many species of upland game ranging from squirrel to wild boar. Many more of his active recreational hours were spent fishing, having waded hundreds of miles of mountain trout streams. His observational sport was watching and studying politics and politicians starting with "silent" Pres. Calvin Coolidge. He predicted before George W. Bush took office that he would be the worst of the 14 Presidents he remembered. In hindsight, as George W. Bush vacated the White House, Bob observed that he will someday attain notoriety. As future historians and 'one handed' economists analyze the 8 years that he served, they should conclude beyond a shadow of doubt that Supply Side Economics don't work.
"Bob was a member of The United Church, Chapel on the Hill, in Oak Ridge and had attended churches of many other denominations. He also kept close touch with the Martha Baptist Church in eastern Morgan Co., KY, where most of his relatives were members.
"Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mae Musick Smith; parents, Clarence and Amanda Cox Smith; sister, Cora; brothers, Leonard, Rufus, Emerson, Alfred, Zane, & Cortis; niece, Rita Smith Lykins; nephews Danny Wayne Smith and Bill McDaniel; and numerous cousins.
"He is survived by sister, Letha McDaniel of Chattanooga, TN; nieces, Gale Smith Negm of Raleigh, NC; Avanell Smith Adams of West Liberty, KY; Susan Smith McNabb of Russell, KY; Janice Smith Moore of Milton, FL, Sherry McDaniel Bovey and husband, Seth, of Alexandria, LA; nephews, Clarence Andy Smith and wife, Karen of Woodbridge, VA,. Robert McDaniel and wife, Jodie of East Ridge, TN, John Moore and wife, Jessica of Sartell, MN; and numerous cousins, grand-nieces, grand-nephew, etc. Special friends include Gwynne Griffith (Mae's niece) and Stan Sosnowski (fishing and hunting pal).
"Receiving of friends will be Saturday, January 7th, 5 - 6 PM at Weatherford Mortuary.
"The family will receive friends again on Tuesday, 10-12 PM at Herald-Stewart-Halsey Funeral Home in West Liberty, KY, funeral service at noon with burial to follow at Clarence Smith Cemetery.
