EDWARD CANTRELL, son of JOHN RILEY CANTRELL and SARAH ALICE "ALICE" BURCHETT, was born February 28, 1897 in Ophir, Morgan County, Kentucky, died February 4, 1967 in Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky. He married CORA ESTEP about 1919. She was born about 1902 in Kentucky, died in 1937, and is buried in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Notes: When Ed Cantrell Jr.'s World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in West Liberty, Morgan County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a farmer, that he was single, and that he was born in 1895. He was found to be of medium height and slender build, and he had brown eyes and sandy hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

When Ed Cantrill's World War II draft registration card was filled out on April 27, 1942 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was self-employed in Elna, Johnson County, that the person who would always know his address was Lizzie Alice Cantrill of Elna, and that he was born February 28, 1895 in Ophir, Morgan County, Kentucky. He was found to be 5 feet 9 inches tall, he weighed 125 pounds, and he had gray eyes, red hair, and a light complexion.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website shows that Ed Cantrell lived from February 28, 1897 to February 4, 1966, and was buried in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and that Cora Cantrell died in 1937, and was buried in the same cemetery. There is a photo of Cora's headstone, but none of Edward's.

     Services Held February 6 for Ed Cantrell, 70. Ed Cantrell, age 70 died Saturday, February 4, at 10 a.m. in a local hospital following a brief illness.
     Funeral services were conducted Monday February 6, at 10:30 a.m. at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home with Lonza Reed officiating.
     Interment followed in the Pendleton Cemetery at Ophir. Cantrell was born in Morgan County on February 28, 1897 and had resided in West Van Lear.
     His wife the late Cora Estep Cantrell preceded him in death.
     Surviving are three sons, James Arnold, Arlan and John all of Cincinnati, Ohio, two daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Alice Cantrell of Cincinnati and Mrs. Mary Ellen Wright of Flemingburg, five brothers, Mance, Wonnie, Clay and Estill Cantrell all of Paintsville. Jimmy Cantrell of Ophir and Willie Cantrell of Fuget and three sisters, Mrs. Rendle Hayes of Fuget, Miss L. Cantrell of Fairborn, Ohio and Mrs. Esta Pennington of Flat Gap. 20 grandchildren also survive.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Ed Cantrell was born February 25, 1896, and died in February of 1967. He received his Social Security card prior to 1951 in Ohio, and his last place of residence was in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.

GULLETT - Mae Gullett was born July 16, 1915, and on December 24, 1929, she married Elvin Van Hoose at Barnetts Creek in Johnson County, KY. She remembers riding to her wedding atop a small mare. Crossing a frozen Paint Creek on a cold Christmas Eve, Mae and Elvin made their way to the home of United Baptist minister John Picklesimer for a ceremony to be witnessed by Elzie Picklesimer and Elvin's brother-in-law, Albert Lemaster.
     They began their marriage living in Johnson County and working for local farmers. Their first child, Gladys Pauline, was born on December 30, 1930, but died the next day -their first wedding anniversary. Mae and Elvin had seven other children born in Johnson County:
     Anna Louise Van Hoose (born February 5, 1932;
     Harry Clayton Van Hoose (born Mar. 11, 1934, died Dec. 9, 1989);
     Dissie Ilene Van Hoose (born Mar. 29, 1936);
     Doris Jean Van Hoose (born Mar. 5, 1938);
     Mary Magdalene Van Hoose (born Mar. 23, 1940);
     Verina Irene Van Hoose (born Aug. 14, 1942); and
     John See Van Hoose (born Mar. 6, 1944).
     Mae Gullett Van Hoose was the mother of eight children and grandmother of 24. Mae died Nov. 17, 1991, and is buried in Mutual, OH.

John C. married Almira Keesee and is buried in Lewis County, KY. John C. and Almira had a son, Levi Jasper (born Feb. 19, 1842). Levi Jasper married Malissa Salyer and they had a son, John William, On Sep. 3, 1877. John William married Lou Anna O'Bryan. Levi Jasper, Malissa, John William and Lou Anna are all buried in the Old Pelphrey Cemetery on Cliffton Branch. John William and Lou Anna are the parents of Elvin (born Jan. 7, 1911).      The body of Mace Cantrell age 52, prominent merchant and farmer of Flat Gap was found hanging in a barn near his home by members of his family early Tuesday morning. It is thought he had taken his own life after becoming despondent over the loss of two sons, Norman Cantrell, who died while serving in World War II, and Odes Cantrell, who was reported missing in Korea a few days ago. A third son, Emery Cantrell had received a call for induction into the armed services. A son-in-law, Arnold Fyffe, was killed while serving in the navy during World War II. Cantrell was born October 3, 1898 at Elna, Ky., the son of Noah and Amanda McKenzie Cantrell. He had lived at Elna before moving to Flat Gap about four years ago. In 1920 he was married to Anna Bolin, who survives him. Other survivors include his mother, two sons, Emery Cantrell and Tommie Cantrell of Flat Gap, five daughters, Mrs. Carma Brandeg, Fairbourne, Ohio, Mrs. Ruth Kelly, Juanita and Venus at home, and Miss Gay Cantrell, of Dayton, Ohio, also seven sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Allie Salyers, Mrs. C. Salyers, both of Flat Gap, Mrs. Volney Fyffe, Elna, Mrs. Foster Hamilton, Red Bush, Mrs. Herald Holbrook, Relief, Mrs. Hasten Brown, Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. Rado Stambaugh of Volga. Funeral services will be held at the Bethel Church at Flat Gap by Rev. Lonza Reed on Friday, January 5, at 11:00 a. m. Interment will be made in the family cemetery at Flat Gap under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home.

He was born July 21, 1889 in Relief, Morgan County, Kentucky, died March 12, 1983 in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Sparks Cemetery in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky. John Rowland married (2) VIRGINIA "VIRGIE" SPARKS, daughter of LAFAYETTE SPARKS and PHOEBE ELLEN SALYER, about 1926. PHOEBE ANN PENNINGTON, daughter of ELIZABETH CANTRELL and WILLIAM RILEY PENNINGTON, was born June 26, 1890 in Morgan County, Kentucky, and died December 17, 1915 in Red Bush, Johnson County, Kentucky. She married JOHN F. HOLBROOK, son of DETROIT "TROY" HOLBROOK and SARAH L. HOLBROOK, about 1910. He was born December 3, 1893 in Morgan County, Kentucky, died September 10, 1961 in Red Bush, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in the family cemetery in Red Bush, Johnson County, Kentucky. John Holbrook married (2) LILLIE SMITH.

Notes: The 1900 census shows that Pheobe was born in June of 1889, and her sister Sarah was born in September of 1889, which isn't possible.

According to Kentucky birth records, John F. Holbrook was born December 3, 1893 in Morgan County to Detroit Holbrook (b. Morgan County) and Sarah L. Holbrook (b. Morgan County).
