HASCAL "TACK" CONLEY, son of JOHN SMITH CONLEY and ELIZABETH BRAMER, was born October 27, 1880 in Fleming County, Kentucky, died October 11, 1949 in Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky, and is buried in Berry, Harrison County, Kentucky. He married ELLEN LANTER, daughter of ROBERT LARKIN LANTER and MARGARET JANE CARR, March 29, 1905. She was born August 1, 1880 in Kentucky, and died February 1, 1962 in Kenton County, Kentucky.

From Dennis Conley: "According to an elder family member, 'Tack' got his nickname in school when he answered a question from the teacher. The teacher was asking an eighth grade student a question when second grader 'Tack' answered the question. The teacher promptly told him he was 'sharp as a tack.' The name stuck with him throughout his life and many only knew him as 'Tack.'"

According to his obituary, Robert Larkin Lanter (age 87), was born July 17, 1845, and died March 5, 1933 at home in Morgan. He was married to Miss Margaret Carr on March 19, 1874, and she preceded him in death on March 21, 1929. They had 9 children, 6 of whom survived him: R. D. Lanter (of Butler), Elbert Lanter (Cynthiana), Mrs. Hascle Conley (Boyd), Mrs. Isiriah Kirk (Catawba), Mrs. Elmer Wills (Morgan), and Mrs. Harlan Vaughn (Morgan). He was also survived by 1 brother, Ewel Lanter (Cynthiana); 17 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

According to her death certificate, Margrett Jane Carr Lanter died March 21, 1929 in Boyd, Harrison County, Kentucky, from influenza. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Kentucky, her birth date as September 20, 1852, her marital status as married, her parents as James Carr (b. Virginia) and Elizabeth Malone (b. Kentucky), and the informant as R. L. Lanter of Boyd, Kentucky.

When Haskel Conley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Harrison County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a railroad laborer fof L & N Railroad in Boyd County, Kentucky, that his closest relative was Ellen Conley of Boyd County, Kentucky, and that he was born October 27, 1880. He was found to be tall and slender, and he had gray eyes and dark-colored hair.

According to his death certificate, Hascal Conley died October 11, 1949 in Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky, from cancer. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Fleming County, his birth date as October 27, 1880, his marital status as married, his occupation as retired railroad watchman, his parents as John H. Conley and Elizabeth Bramer, the informant as Ellen Conley, and the burial place as Berry, Kentucky.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Hascal Conley died October 11, 1949 in Campbell County at the age of 68. He was living in Campbell County at the time of his death.

She was survived by 4 sons; John (of Ludlow), James (Independence), Jesse (Seville, Ohio), and Kenneth (Florence); 1 daughter, Mrs. Lillian Mote (Covington); 1 brother, Bert Lanter (Falmouth); 3 sisters, Mrs. Mary Wills (Falmouth), Mrs. Cora Kirk (Covington), and Mrs. Alice Vaughn (Covington); 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Ellen Conley died February 1, 1962 in Kenton County at the age of 81. She was living in Campbell County at the time of her death.

MARTHA NEWCARIOUS "CLERCY" CONLEY, daughter of EDMOND D. CONLEY III and ELIZABETH MCCARTY, was born in September of 1852 in Kentucky, died February 22, 1920 in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in the family cemetery in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky. She married HARDIN H. "HARDY" SALYER, son of JOSEPH SALYER and SARAH "SALLY" SALYER, February 20, 1868 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. He was born March 12, 1844 in Kentucky, died February 10, 1934 in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Notes: Information on "Caressia" Conley can be found on page 28 of "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society. In that book it only says that she was born in 1853.

Hardin "Hardy" Salyer was the brother of Asa Salyer.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Hardy Salyer married Newcarious Conley on February 20, 1868 in Magoffin County at the home of Henry Conley. The witnesses were Isaiah Conley and Allen Penix, and the minister was Wallis Bailey.

According to her death certificate, Clercy Conley Salyer died February 22, 1920 in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky, from general paralysis. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Kentucky, her birth date as "not known," her age as 68 years, her marital status as married, her parents as Edmond Conley (b. Kentucky) and Betsey McCarty (b. Kentucky), the informant as Monroe Salyer of Flat Gap, and the burial place as the family graveyard in Flat Gap.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Clercy C. Salyer died February 22, 1920 in Johnson County at the age of 68.

According to his death certificate, Hardy Salyers died February 10, 1934 in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky, from arterio sclerosis. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Scott County, Virginia, his birth date as March 12, 1838, his marital status as widowed, his wife as Martha Salyers, his occupation as farmer, his father as Joseph Salyers (b. "HARDY" SALYER, was born July 3, 1870 in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky, died September 6, 1941 in Richwood, Union County, Ohio, and is buried in Price Cemetery in Richwood, Union County, Ohio. He married LAURA ALICE SALYER, daughter of LOGAN SALYER and FRANCES LOURENA MCKENZIE, about 1892. She was born October 9, 1875 in Volga, Johnson County, Kentucky, died December 10, 1965 in Richwood, Union County, Ohio, and is buried in Price Cemetery in Richwood, Union County, Ohio. Laura Salyer married (2) CHARLES CALLAHAN.

According to Kentucky marriage records, Logan Salyer (2nd marriage, age 25) married Sucky J. Williams (1st marriage, age 21) on June 27, 1879 in Johnson County.

According to his death certificate, Sanford Salyer died May 27, 1913 in Flat Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky, from chronic tubercular cystitis. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birth date as May 20, 1877, his marital status as married, his occupation as farmer, his parents as Logan Salyer (b. Information found on findagrave.com and a photo of their headstone shows that James Monroe Salyer lived from 1870 to 1941, and was buried in Price Cemetery in Richwood, Union County, Ohio, and that Alice Salyer lived from 1875 to 1965, and was buried in the same cemetery.

He was born September 23, 1876 in Johnson County, Kentucky, died May 27, 1942 in Barnetts Creek, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Volga, Johnson County, Kentucky. James Floyd Dye married (1) ALMIRA SALYER.

This is a cemetery that was used extensively for re-interment of burials from other cemeteries due to the construction of Paintsville Lake and road construction throughout Johnson County.

     Aaron was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved sports and was a huge Houston Texans fan. He enjoyed going camping and traveled to many places with his son, Cole, for baseball. Aaron had a passion for building things and was a very handy man. He was a friend to everyone as he never met a stranger. Aaron truly loved his dogs, Abby and Tucker, and now being reunited with his beloved dog, Huey.
     Aaron Nelson Austin passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in Katy, Texas at the age of 53 years.
     He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Tricia Austin; his son, Cole Austin; his brothers, Terry Newton and Michael Cooper; and his second mom, Pam “Red” Glawe; as well as many other family members and friends.
     Aaron was preceded in death by his parents, Pete Austin and Suzanna Le Master Austin.
     A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the Schmidt Funeral Home East Avenue Chapel, in Katy, with Rev. Brian Elliott officiating.

When James Harrey Holbrook's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in West Liberty, Morgan County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer, that he had a wife and children in Relief, Morgan County, and that he was born March 7, 1898. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had blue eyes and black hair.

On her brother's World War I draft registration card which was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Morgan County, Kentucky, Early Dewey Weaver stated that his sister, Vessie Holbrook, was his closest relative. Both of the brothers that are found living with Vessie in 1920, Arbie [Arba] and Early, are found on page 5 of the 1900 census for District 72 (Swetnam) in Lawrence County, Kentucky, living with their parents. In 1910, the children of this family are found living in various houses, indicating that both parents had probably died. Earl Weaver is found living with a Skaggs family in 1910 in Lawrence County (District 102 - Page 15). Early was born February 26, 1899. Another brother, Hobart (age 13), is found living with another Skaggs family as a hired boy (Johnson County - District 75 - Page 18). Arba is found living with his grandfather and his wife, Pleasant and Margaret Weaver. Vessie couldn't be located in 1910.

According to his death certificate, Hobart Weaver died march 29, 1952 in King's Daughters Hospital in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, from a cerebral hemorrhage. Virgil and Virginia married in 1936 at Hillsboro Ohio Church of the Nazarene where they were very active in leadership until December 1970 when they relocated to a farm in Circleville, Ohio and again were very active in the First Church of the Nazarene in Circleville until 2012 when he transferred his membership to Grove City Church of the Nazarene. Virgil went to live with his daughter and son-in-law Olive and Harvey Hoagland in Grove City in September of 2008 and passed away in the loving arms of Olive and Harvey and into the arms of his Heavenly Father. Virgil and Virginia were very active in missionary work and donated the funds to build a church in Guatemala City, Guatemala named Holbrook Memorial Chapel.       "Annabelle was born January 9, 1920, at Sitka, Ky. She was the third child of the late Rolla and Lillie Conley Dixon. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Buell, and her brother, Garland Dixon.
      "Annabelle is survived by her sister, Dorothy Schroyer, and 2 sisters in law, Aileen Dixon and Zona Songer, all of Paintsville. Also surviving is a host of friends and cousins, as well as several nieces and nephews and their families, all of whom she loved and regarded as her very own "adopted" children. They include: Roger Dixon of Michigan, Kenneth Dixon of Ohio, Marilyn Sue Chesney of California, Rick Daniel of Florida, Harry Daniel of Virginia, Phyllis Foote of Maryland, Sandy Dills of Ohio, Myrtle Gudot of Indiana, Jess Daniel Songer of Ashland, Walta Lee Preston and Marcia Helton of Paintsville.
      "Annabelle grew up in Paintsville and was educated in the Paintsville City Schools and graduated in 1939, then worked as a switchboard operator for Southern Bell in Paintsville. They settled in Allegan, Michigan, where Annie worked many years at North American Rockwell. Upon retirement, they spent winters in Florida until Buell's sudden death in 1983. They enjoyed traveling and always thought of others by sharing their experiences through pictures and stories.
      "Annie was blessed by two special Michigan families who loved her and watched over her. Her cousin Jimmy Ray Conley and his family lived near her and assisted her often with anything she needed done, and included in their family gatherings. They came to her aid many, many times when she was sick and were always only a phone call away.
      "Her second Michigan family was her nephew Roger Dixon's family. As Roger states, "Annie held me the day I was born in February 1942 in my grandmother's house in Paintsville. She did not have children of her own, so when we moved to Michigan, we became her "kids". Our children were her "grandchildren" and their children her "great-grands".
      "Since our parents lived in southern Ohio and Kentucky, Annie Granny, as she became known, and Uncle Buell often fulfilled the Grandparents' Day at school, attending various sports events and plays. After Uncle Buell's death, Annie Granny remained in the children's lives - traveling to see them play and coach sports, as well as going to birthday parties for the great-grands once they were born.
      "Annie always joined our entire family for Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations and we included her on Mother's Day and other occasions when we got together for a big meal. She was a very special part of our lives ad the world is a little colder place with her absence.
      "Anne was saved, baptized and joined First Baptist Church, Paintsville, in the early 1940's. She became an active member of First Baptist Church, Allegan, Michigan, when she moved north, and has attended up until her recent illness.
      "Annie loved her family and friends unconditionally, never asking anything in return. She was always giving and serving and couldn't do enough to help others. Her life was a life of kindness and patience. Her shining spirit will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her, but the memory of her loving kindness will live on in the lives of those who will sadly miss her."

Active in electronics, he was a former owner of the Allegan TV Cable System in Michigan and continued his work with TV cable associations throughout the country with equipment he designed and manufactured in Allegan. Funeral services were held March 22 in the chapel of the Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville, conducted by Dr. Charles E. Milam of the First Baptist Church. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park near Paintsville. He was a member of the Baptist Church and served during World War II in the United States Air Force. Masonic services were held the evening prior to interment. Active pallbearers were Eugene Dills, Charles Helton, and the following nephews: Dr. Roger Dixon, Kenneth Dixon, Dr. Jess D. Songer, Alton Songer, and Harry Lee Daniel."
