"A veteran of World War I, he served thirteen years with the U.S. Army and twelve years with the Paintsville Police force, part of that time as Chief. He was elected sheriff of Johnson County in 1950 and served until 1954." He was born September 15, 1891 in Barnetts Creek, died March 10, 1963 in St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia, and was buried in the family cemetery. He was born February 11, 1873 in Red Bush, Johnson County, Kentucky, died May 18, 1952 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Wells-Buckingham Cemetery in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Holbrook lived from 1873 to 1952, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to her obituary, Polly M. Johnson Holbrook (age 79), wife of George Holbrook, died suddenly at the home of her son, J. H. Holbrook, near Circleville, Ohio, October 26, 1947, and was buried in Wells-Buckingham Cemetery. She had been living in Ohio for the prior 22 years. She was survived by her husband; 3 sons, Herbert Holbrook (of Lynchburg, Ohio), Harry Holbrook (Circleville, Ohio), and Otis Holbrook (Fuget, Kentucky); 2 daughters, Mrs. McKinley Baldwin (Paintsville) and Mrs. Florence Hill (Portsmouth, Ohio); 2 brothers, Otto Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Charlie Johnson (Dayton, Ohio); and 3 sisters, Mrs. Ella Kelly (Red Bush), Mrs. Lou Barber (Red Bush), and Mrs. Laura Layne (Harold). When Everett Gullett's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 4, 1917 in Paintville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Paintsville, that he had a wife and 1 child, and that he was born August 5, 1891 in Paintsville. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had light blue eyes and dark brown hair.

When Everett Lee Gullett's World War II draft registration card was filled out on April 26, 1942 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio, he stated that he was working in the Car Department of Norfolk & Western Railway Company in Portsmouth, that the person who would always know his address was Mrs. Eva May of Portsmouth, and that he was born August 5, 1891 in Paintsville, Kentucky. He was found to be 5 feet 10 inches tall, he weighed 170 pounds, and he had blue eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, June Gullett was born June 9, 1898, and died May 15, 1975. She received her Social Security card in 1965-1966 in Delaware, and her last place of residence was in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Everett Gullett was born July 5, 1891, and died in May of 1973. He received his Social Security card prior to 1951 through the railroad board, and his last place of residence was in Winter Haven, Polk County, Florida.

RICE, son of NANCY CATHERINE SALYER and JAMES RICE, was born June 15, 1876 in Johnson County, Kentucky, died August 18, 1947 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, and is buried in Blanton-Rice Cemetery in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky. He married DORA ALICE SPRADLIN, daughter of HAMILTON SWEATNAM SPRADLIN and MARTHA JANE LEMASTER, May 3, 1900 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was born in October of 1879 in Kentucky, died in 1958, and is buried in Blanton-Rice Cemetery in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky.

When John Rice's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Oil Springs, Magoffin County, that his closest relative was Dora Rice of Oil Springs, Magoffin County, and that he was born June 15, 1876. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had brown eyes and dark-colored hair.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, John Rice (age 22) married Lora A. Spradlin [sic] on May 3, 1900 in Johnson County.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website shows that John Rice lived from June 15, 1876 to October 18, 1947, and was buried in Blanton-Rice Cemetery near Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, and that Dora Alice Rice lived from 1879 to 1958, and was buried in the same cemetery. No headstone photos are provided.

According to his death certificate, John Rice died August 18, 1947 in Oil Springs, Magoffin County, Kentucky [sic], from a cerebral hemorrhage. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Johnson County, his birth date as 1878, his age as 68 years 8 months 18 days, his marital status as married, his wife as Dora Alice "Sprdlin," his parents as James Rice (b. Magoffin County) and Nancy Salyer (b. Johnson County), the informant as Nancy J. Saylor of Oil Springs, Kentucky, the doctor as Grant Rice [Ulysses Grant Rice], and the burial place as Oil Springs.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, John Rice died August 18, 1947 in Magoffin County at the age of 68.

ELEANDER "ELLEN" CONLEY, daughter of HENRY CONLEY and REBECCA BLAIR, was born about 1839 in Kentucky, and died April 28, 1862 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She married ROBERT W. MAY, son of BLAIR MAY and SARAH ADAMS, October 8, 1857 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He was born in April of 1840 in Kentucky, died November 9, 1900 in Howard, Miner County, South Dakota, and is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Howard, Miner County, South Dakota.

Notes: Information on this family can be found on page 351 of "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society. In that book it says that Mary Conley married Farmer May and that Lucina Conley married a May. It doesn't list Eleander as a child of Henry and Rebecca.

Information on this family can also be found on page 141 of the book "The Founding of Harman's Station" by William Elsey Connelley. In that book it says that Mary Conley was born in 1841 and married Farmer May, but died shortly after marriage. It also says that Lucina was born in 1843 and married a May. It also doesn't list Eleander as a child of Henry and Rebecca.

On page 127 of the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall it says that Mary Conley married Farmer May and Lucina Conley married William Baldridge.

There is quite a bit of information on Robert W. May found online at ancestry.com that was done by his great-grandson, Dr. Arvid Leighton of Tehachapi, California. He did his research in 2007 using original documents found in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

Robert W. May was the brother of William W. May and Harvey Trimble May.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Robt. W. May (single, resident of Johnson County, b. Floyd County, age 18) married Eleander Conley (single, resident of Johnson County, b. Floyd County, age 17) on October 8, 1857 in Johnson County.

An application for a Civil War headstone for Robert W. May shows that he was a private in Company C., Regiment 55, of the Kentucky Volunteers. He died November 9, 1900, and the cemetery that he was buried in was Graceland Cemetery in Howard, Miner County, South Dakota.

On page 103 of the 1850 census for My District in Floyd County, Kentucky (dated August 29, 1850), Blair May is listed as the head of the household for house #641, he's a farmer, born in Virginia, and he's 42 years old. Also listed is Sarah (born in Kentucky, age 35), William (born in Kentucky, age 16), Harvey (born in Kentucky, age 14), Robert W. (born in Kentucky, age 10), Samuel (born in Kentucky, age 8), Deal (born in Kentucky, age 6), Stephen L. (born in Kentucky, age 4), and Rebecca (born in Kentucky, age 4 months).

She married THOMAS ERNEST STRINGER about 1913. He was born December 16, 1878 in Missouri, died in 1849 in Lowell, Cherokee County, Kansas, and is buried in Lowell Cemetery in Lowell, Cherokee County, Kansas.

Notes: When Thomas Ernest Stringer's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Webb City, Jasper County, Missouri, he stated that he was a laborer working for the railroad, that his closest relative was "Cora Emily Stringer (Wife)" of Joplin, Jasper County, and that he was born December 16, 1878. He was found to be short and slender.

Information found on findagrave.com and photos of their headstones shows that Cora E. Springer lived from 1892 to 1981 and was buried in Lowell Cemetery in Lowell, Cherokee County, Kansas, and that Thomas E. Stringer lived from 1879 to 1940 and was buried in the same cemetery. It also says that Thomas died January 22, 1940, and that Cora died in November of 1981.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Cora Stringer was born May 7, 1892, and died in November of 1981. She received her Social Security card prior to 1951 in Kansas, and her last place of residence was in Galena, Cherokee County, Kansas.

On page 5 of the 1920 census for District 98 (Twin Groves) in Jasper County, Missouri (dated January 5, 1920), Thomas E. Stringer is listed as the head of the household for house #62, he's a miner in a zinc mine, born in Missouri, parents born in Missouri, and he's 39 years old. Also listed is Cora E. (wife, born in Missouri, parents born in Missouri, age 27).

Notes: When Charlie Albert May's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1918, he stated that he was working for W. L. Ricksecker in Galena, Kansas, that his closest relative wasa Mrs. Iva A. May of Galena, that he was born December 11, 1896 in Pulaski County, Missouri, and that he didn't know where his father was born, other than the United States. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had light blue eyes and light-colored hair.

According to Lawrence County, Missouri, marriage records, Charles A. May of Aurora, Lawrence County, under the age of 21, married Iva Shoemaker of Aurora, age 18, at his home on January 22, 1915.

According to Jasper County, Missouri, marriage records, Bert May of Galena, Cherokee County, Kansas, over 21 years old, married Leona Day of Galena, over 18 years old, on September 8, 1935 in Joplin, Jasper County. Leona was reportedly 1st married to a Day.

Information found on findagrave.com and a photo of her headstone shows that Anna M. May lived from 1901 to 1932, and was buried in Hill Crest Cemetery in Galena, Cherokee County, Kansas. She was reportedly the daughter of A. W. and Margaret Alexander Winfield.

A photo of their headstone shows that Bert May lived from 1896 to 1949, and that Leona Jane May lived from 1902 to 1997. Information found on findagrave.com shows that Leona was the daughter of Daniel Henry and Nancy Margaret Detherow Robinson.

May married (2) CLYDE M. LYONS, son of GEORGE W. LYONS and KESIAH HAMPTON, about 1907. He was born February 8, 1893 in Johnson County, Kentucky, died September 10, 1960 in Nicholasville, Jessamine County, Kentucky, and is buried in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Martha Lyons died January 5, 1956 in Fayette County at the age of 85. She was living in Boyd County at the time of her death.

According to his obituary, Clyde M. "Dock" Lyons (age 78), was born February 8, 1882 in Johnson County, died September 10, 1960 in a Nicholasville, Kentucky, nursing home, ans was buried in an Ashland Cemetery. Notes: When Luther Conley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, he stated that he was married, that he was a core maker for Lyons-Atlas Company in Indianapolis, that he had been a Sergeant in the Infantry, and that he was born February 24, 1888 in Paintsville, Kentucky. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had brown eyes and light brown hair.
