CORA DIXON, daughter of ANDREW FLEMING "FLEM" DIXON and SARAH MARGARET MCKENZIE, was born April 11, 1902 in Kentucky, and died August 5, 1980 in Xenia, Green County, Ohio. She married JOHN W. MAHAN, son of LEE MAHAN and ROXIE E. STURGELL, about 1920. He was born August 12, 1898 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and died November 12, 1963 in Jefferson County, Kentucky.

The obituary of Cecil VanHoose found on the obituary page of the The Johnson County Historical & Genealogical Society's website [he died on May 18, 1929]:

"One of the most deplorable and withal the saddest tragedies to take place in Kentucky, because of the youthfulness of the participants involved, occurred in Paintsville last Saturday morning at about 10 o'clock, when Carl Mahan, age 7, shot and almost instantly killed his playmate, Cecil VanHoose, age 8. The tragedy occurred near the home of the Mahan boy. News of the killing sent a shock of horror through the entire city when the fact became known. The Mahan boy is a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Mahan, while the VanHoose boy was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert VanHoose. The parents of the children were neighbors and friends. The tragedy was the result of a fight the boys had engaged in over the possession of some scrap iron which they had gathered to sell as junk which would have brought a few cents from a junk dealer. According to persons who witnessed the fight between two youngsters, they had battled for some time when Mahan started for his home saying he would kill his adversary, and he made good on his threat. He entered the home of his parents, climbed up on the back of a chair and secured his father's shot gun which was hanging over the door next to the ceiling. He returned to the door and discharged the gun at his adversary, the full charge of a 16-gauge gun entering the breast, stomach and abdomen. The VanHoose boy, mortally wounded, started on a run for his home, crying piteously, 'Mamma, mamma.' He ran about fifty yards before he fell. Neighbors who ran to his assistance and picked him up found that he was dying, but willing hands placed the little fellow in a car and rushed him in the hospital but breathed his last just as he reached the hospital. None of the Mahan family were at home when the tragedy occurred, it is said. The Mahan boy, when questioned by the officers, admitted that he did the killing. He went into the home and showed the officers how he had secured the gun. He had dragged a chair up to the door and had climbed up far enough to reach the gun which was presumably loaded, returned to the front door and discharged the gun at his playmate. The bot does not seem to realize the enormity of his crime and has no remorse of conscience. He is reported to have told officers that he intended to kill the VanHoose boy and would do the same thing again. The youthful murderer was arraigned before Judge Butcher but the case postponed until after the funeral of the VanHoose boy, which was conducted Monday, but will be recalled during the week. County officials and attorneys are in a quandary as to what disposition to make of the case as this is one of the most unusual to come before a court in Kentucky, the boy charged with the crime has not reached the age of seven according to his parents. The parents of the two boys were almost prostrated over the sad occurrence. The two families were close friends and neighbors. The parents of the boy who did the killing are sorely grieved over the tragedy."

When John Mahan's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a chauffer working for E. W.      "Minnie Marshie Sparks and Dennis Crace were married on October 17, 1917 and exactly five years later Minnie Marshie Sparks Crace married my grandfather, Thomas Christopher Henize on October 17, 1922. When Dennis was drafted he told my grandmother that he felt he wouldn't be returning and he had only one request of her, that she wait 5 years before marrying again. A request that she honored to the day. He also took her to the place he wanted to be buried, on the mountain top of he Crace place. Dennis' grave is the first grave in that cemetery.
"My grandmother never wore a wedding ring when she was married to my grandfather. She was riding a horse across Paint Creek when she lost the wedding band that Dennis had given her. She never wanted to wear another ring, which is telling. Though I know my grandmother loved my grandfather, it was apparent that Dennis was her true love because every time he came up in conversation her eyes lit up. After my grandfather passed away I would often see her sitting alone holding a shell that Dennis had given her. He carved her name on one side and his on the other. I have that shell and it's among my most prized possessions."
