Notes: When Jerry Hunt's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Pikeville, Pike County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer, that his closest relative was his wife in Mouth Card, Pike County, and that he was born March 12, 1882. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had blue eyes and black hair.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, there was a Mary C. Hunt that died November 26, 1971 in Pike County at the age of 84.

She was born about 1876, and died in Salyersville, Magoffin County, Kentucky.

He was born September 11, 1838 in Floyd County, Kentucky, died December 1, 1921 in Buffalo, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Wheeler Cemetery in Johnson County, Kentucky. Bracken Davis married (2) ANNA MOORE about 1910. She was born about 1844 in Kentucky, and died before 1920.

Conley, daughter of David and Polly Howes Conley, married Rhodes Mead. Rhodes Mead actually married Elizabeth Conley, daughter of David M. and Mahala Roberson Conley. Elizabeth Conley is found with the name "Elizabeth" or "Elisabeth" in all of the census reports from 1850 to 1930, and in 1870 Rhodes and Elizabeth can be found living next to her brother David and his family. Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Conley, daughter of David and Polly Howes Conley, is found with the names Polley E., Mary, and Mary E. in the census reports from 1850 to 1900. She reportedly died March 16, 1908 in Johnson County, Kentucky. Her brother, Henry, married Bracken Davis' sister, Mahala. Bracken Davis was also the brother of Mary Elizabeth Davis.

      He was reared in Johnson County and spent the greater part of his life on a farm on the Big Sandy River at the mouth of Buffalo Creek. Like his father Mr. Davis was of a high temper which was of aid to him in his practice since he, in addition to farming and running a ferry over the Big Sandy River, was an attorney and active in the political affairs of the county. He was possessed with a fine recollection and took much interest in the family traditions. Mr. Davis joined the United Baptist Church at Fish Trap on August 3, 1861, and was baptized by the Reverend James Pelfrey [James Pelphrey]. He is buried near Concord, Kentucky.

On daughter Lucina's birth record, her parents are listed as Richard B. Davis and Mary E. Conley.

According to Kentucky marriage records, Bracken L. Davis (b. Floyd County, age 18) married Mary Conley (b. Floyd County, age 16) on November 13, 1856 in Johnson County.

According to his death certificate, Bracken L. Davis died December 1, 1921 in Buffalo, Johnson County, Kentucky, from old age. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birth date as September 11, 1838, his marital status as married, his parents as Elias Davis (b. Kentucky) and Anna Curtis (b. When John Powel Davis' World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a day laborer for Consolidation Coal Company of Van Lear, Johnson County, that he had a wife and a child, and that he was born November 16, 1894 in Thelma, Kentucky. He was found to be short, of medium build, and he had brown eyes and brown hair.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website shows that John P. Davis lisved from 1893 to 1936, and was buried in Davis Cemetery on Davis Branch in Johnson County, Kentucky, and that Virgie Lee Huff Davis lived from 1894 to 1939, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to his death certificate, J. P. Davis died July 12, 1936 in Prestonsburg, Floyd County, Kentucky, from "Suicide by Arsenic Poisoning in Prestonsburg County Jail." Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Johnson County, his birth date as November 27, 1890, his marital status as married, his wife as Virgie Huff Davis, his parents as E. P. Davis (b. Johnson County) and M. J. Blackburn (b. Pike County), the informant as Bob Davis of Upper Middle Creek, and the burial place as Johnson County.

According to his obituary found on The Johnson County Historical & Genealogical Society's website:

     John P. Davis, age about 44 years, died last Saturday night or early Sunday morning [July 11th or 12th] at Prestonsburg from effects of poisoning, said to have been self-administered. Davis, a native of this county, had been having financial difficulties lately it is said. He was in the poultry business and had been buying chickens and eggs in Johnson and Martin Counties. During the course of his business he had given a number of checks which were returned because of insufficient funds and which he could not make good. He was arrested by Floyd County officers and placed in Prestonsburg and sentenced to a long term. Because of the jail sentence and financial difficulties he is said to have become despondent and drank the fatal drought of poison. Mr. Davis was a native of Johnson County and was a son of the late Leck Davis who resided near Paintsville. He had been known as a good citizen and had never been in any previous trouble of any kind. He was a member of the church for many years. The body was prepared for burial by the undertaking department of the Mountain Furniture and Hardware Company. Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Cedar Grove Church at 10 o'clock, in charge of Rev. Leonard Walters and others of the United Baptist faith. Burial followed in the J. Melvin Hall cemetery on Davis Branch on the east side of the river. Mr. Davis had many relatives and friends in Johnson County who regret the sad occurance. Besides his widow he is survived by five children.

According to one Kentucky death record transcript, J. P. Davis died July 12, 1936 in Floyd County at the age of 46. He was living in Johnson County at the time of his death. According to another, he died in Floyd County at the age of 45 and was living in Prestonsburg at the time.

According to her death certificate, Virgie Huff Davis died December 18, 1939 in Paintsville Hospital in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, from general peritonitis. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Kentucky, her birth date as September 12, 1894, her marital status as widowed, her husband as John Paul Davis, her parents as William Huff (b. Kentucky) and Rebecca Phelps (b. Kentucky), the informant as Millard Huff of West Van Lear, Kentucky, and the burial place as Davis Branch.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Virgie Davis died December 18, 1939 in Johnson County at the age of 42. She was living in Johnson County at the time of her death.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website and a photo of their headstone shows that Mary A. Estep Meade lived from August 2, 1869 to March 16, 1929, and was buried in Meade Cemetery #2 in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and that John C. Meade was born June 5, 1867. The photo of the headstone isn't very good, and nothing can be read on it. The dates listed here come from the transcripts.

According to his death certificate, John Clinton Meade died August 8, 1932 in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, from myocarditis. ALMA CONLEY, daughter of SARAH JANE CONLEY and (unknown), was born in July of 1882 in Kentucky. She married THOMAS FLOYD MEADE, son of ELIZABETH CONLEY and RHODES MEAD, about 1905. He was born December 9, 1885 in Kentucky, died October 17, 1943 in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in the family cemetery in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky. Thomas Meade married (2) MARIE DIXON. She was born about about 1912 in Kentucky.

Thomas Meade's second wife was Marie Dixon, as is shown on his death certificate. There was a Marie Dixon who was living a few houses away from Thomas and Alma's daughter, Alma, in 1930. She was the daughter of Ed Dixon and Lydia Witten. It's unknown if this was the Marie Dixon who married Thomas Meade, but her info from the 1930 census will be included here for future reference. If the Marie Dixon who married Thomas Meade was in fact the daughter of Ed and Lydia Witten Dixon, then she was the sister of Gaynell Dixon.

Alma Conley's father could have been a man by the name of Pendleton, as her name is listed as Alma Pendleton Meade in her son John's obituary.

When Thomas Floyd Meade's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Niles, Johnson County, that his closest relative was "Alma Meade Wife" of Niles, and that he was born December 9, 1885. He was found to be tall, of medium build, and he had blue eyes and dark-colored hair.

According to his death certificate, Thomas Floyd Meade died October 17, 1943 in Staffordsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, from "Canser of lower lip." Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birth date as December 9, 1885, his marital status as married, his wife as Marie Dixon Meade (age 30), his occupation as merchant, his parents as Rhodes Meade (b. Kentucky) and Elizabeth Conley (b. Kentucky), the informant as Mrs. McDonald Crum of Stambaugh, Kentucky, and the burial place as Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky.

According to his obituary, Thomas F. Meade died Sunday, October 17, 1943, following an illness of several months, and was buried in the family cemetery in Oil Springs. He was survived by his wife, Marie Dixon Meade; 2 sons, Marvin Meade (of Oil Springs) and Morris Meade (at home); 4 daughters, Dixie Meade (at home), Mrs. Dorothy Keaton (Staffordsville), Mrs. Donna Crum (Stambaugh), and Mrs. Alma Fairchild (Baltimore, Maryland); 1 brother, Leck Meade (Salyersville); and 1 sister, Mrs. Haley Conley. According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Thomas F. Meade died October 17, 1943 in Johnson County at the age of 57. He was living in Johnson County at the time of his death.

Also listed are Alma (wife, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, she's given birth to 2 children and both are still living, age 26), Marvin (son, born in Kentucky, age 4), and Dixie (daughter, born in Kentucky, age 1).

On page 5 of the 1920 census for District 39 (Oil Springs) in Johnson County, Kentucky (dated January 7, 8, & 9, 1920), Tom F. Meade is listed as the head of the household for house #40, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, and he's 34 years old. She married (1) GREEN LEMASTER, son of SARAH EMILY CONLEY and RANSOM L. LEMASTER, about 1914 in Magoffin County, Kentucky. He was born in December of 1884 in Kentucky, died in June of 1948, and is buried in Lemaster Cemetery in Mash Fork, Magoffin County, Kentucky. She married (2) GRAYDON ARNETT.
