NANCY CANTRELL, daughter of PEGGY CONLEY and ELIJAH CANTRELL, was born about 1804 in North Carolina, and died November 10, 1877 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She married ALFRED DAVIS, son of RICHARD DAVIS and MARY "POLLY" FUGATE, March 6, 1823 in Floyd County, Kentucky. He was born about 1800, and died before 1850.

Notes: Mary Fugate married David H. Conley after Richard Davis died.

Information on this family can be found in the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. On page 147 of that book it says:

The Davis family is of Welch ancestry. There are several sets of Davis' in Kentucky, and for the benefit of those interested, it might be added that the Johnson County family is of no relation to the Jefferson Davis (of Civil War fame) family, although both were of Welch ancestry. Jefferson Davis was born in 1808 at Fairview, Kentucky. There were three brothers that came from Wales and settled near Philadelphia; the youngest of whom was named Evan. He married an Emory, and had one son, Samuel, who was the father of Jefferson Davis. His mother was Jane Cook of Scotch-Irish descent, and they lived most of their lives near Augusta, Georgia, and in Mississippi.
Although James Davis, one of the pioneers of the Davis family in Eastern Kentucky, _____ Johnson County, and settled near West Liberty in Morgan County, there is still another set in that county. Benjamin F. Davis of Ezel, Kentucky, is a member of this family. His father was Travis Davis, who was a son of Benson Davis, the son of John Davis, who came from Virginia.
In addition to the two Davis families discussed hereafter, there was still a third family in Johnson County - that of William Peter Davis who was the son of John Davis. John Davis lived on Bobb's Branch, and his son W. P. Davis was county court clerk of Johnson County a number of years ago. He died recently in Dayton, Ohio.
The ancestors of this Davis family of Johnson County came from either Tazewell or Augusta County, Virginia, probably the latter. See the remarks under Richard Davis, the first.
It is not known whether Richard Davis had any brothers and sisters or if any of them migrated to Kentucky. The records of Mason County show a Thomas Davis who was a road overseer in that county on October 23, 1792; also a Thomas Davis as a deputy surveyor January 22, 1793. The tax list for the same year gives the names James, Robert, and Samuel.

Richard Davis is claimed to have been in the Revolution by some of his descendants. It is doubtful that he was in the Revolution but possible that he could have been in the War of 1812. The old family Bible which has been passed down through the Bracken R. Davis branch of the family and now in the possession of Irene Davis at Meally, Kentucky, gives a Richard R. Davis as being born January 6, 1773, and died at the age of 110. If this were correct, and it appears that it is, since this Bible is 152 years old and has been rebound at one time in plain leather, such as is used in harness shops today, then the conjecture that Mr. Davis was a Revolulutionary soldier would be incorrect. For those of the Davis family desiring to join the Daughter of the American Revolution and other patriotic organizations it might be added here that they are eligible through Abiud Fairchild whose daughter married James Curtis and had a child Elizabeth who married Elias Davis.
From the number of names of James and McHenry that have drifted down through the family it would appear that Richard Davis' father was James McHenry Davis. However, this is only a supposition. It is given here for the reason that almost every book of southwest Virginia makes mention of James Davis acquiring 1,300 acres of land in Augusta County, Virginia, and patented March 19, 1748, which he called "Davis Fancy." Mrs. A. P. Childers (No. 100) states that the father of Richard Davis was James McHenry Davis.
Richard R. Davis is said to have been killed at the crossing of Clinch River, although the Bible mentioned above shows that he lived to be 110 years old, which would appear to be correct as many of this family reached the eighties and nineties.

Richard Davis' wife seems to have been married twice as Elias Davis had a half-brother David Conley who had children: Elizabeth that married a Meade; Lydia; and David Jr. The Bible referred to above has the following names and dates: David H. Conley son of David Conley and Mary his wife born January 3, 1812; Mary who married David Conley Jr., born July 8, 1824.

On page 150 it says:

No. 5. N. ALFRED DAVIS - M. to Matilda (?)

Alfred Davis was born in Virginia. He came to Kentucky and settled at Greenupsburg. He was probably married twice - name of last wife not known. He was killed in the Civil War while in service of the Union Army.

Notes: His obituary found on The Johnson County Historical & Genealogical Society's website:

"Elijah Mollette of Boons Camp, former deputy sheriff of Johnson County under George Spears, and one of the county's best citizens, passed away Wednesday morning May 31, after an illness of more than 11 years. Mr. Mollette was the father of Mrs. Kash Holbrook, who has taught in the Paintsville City Schools for many years, and of Representative John B. Mollette of Van Lear. He had been a merchant and farmer of Boons Camp prior to his illness. He also was one of the superintendents of the Rockcastle Lumber Company which operated a large camp in Martin county and a narrow gauge railroad in both Johnson and Martin counties. A great many of Johnson county's citizens became acquainted with Mr. Mollette through working under him on the railroad and in the lumber camp. He was one of the ablest supervisors and one of the most beloved by his fellow men. Mr. Mollette's physical suffering was not half so great as his mental anguish through all the years he was powerless to do any work. He had to sit idly by and see his family carry on while he could not assist them. The nature of his illness was a form of paralysis which grew continually worse until at the last he was unable to speak above a whisper. When he was so weak that he could not talk to his many friends who visited him during his last days he still made them know they were recognized. When his dear friends would call and he could not talk to them, the tears would stream down his face, and his mental agony was almost unbearable. Besides Mrs. Holbrook and Representative Mollette, Mr. Mollette is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Cline Mollette, and the following children; Mrs. T. F. Fletcher of Inez; Mrs. Ray Colvin of Thealka; Mrs. Jay Preston of Williamsport; Fred Mollette of Van Lear, and Burns Offutt Mollette of Staffordsville. Funeral services for Mr. Mollette were held at the family home at 10 o'clock Thursday morning with Rev. John W. Butcher, Dr. J.R. Fairchild of Inez, and Rev. Millard VanHoose as the officiating ministers. Burial was in the family cemetery."

"Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Cline Mollette of Boon Camp, who died in a local hospital Wednesday morning, April 15, were held at the Boons Camp Freewill Baptist Church, of which she was a member, at 10 a. m. Friday. Mrs. Mollette, 78 years old, had been in poor health for several months. Mrs. Mollette was born in Martin county, May 18, 1874, the daughter of Jake and Martha Setzer Cline. Following her marriage to Elijah Mollette of Books Camp, the couple went to Johnson county where they began housekeeping and where they lived the remainder of their lives. Mr. Mollette, a merchant and farmer who died in 1939, had taken an active interest in politics and was well and favorably known throughout Eastern Kentucky. However, Mr. Mollette suffered a serious illness which for several years rendered him almost helpless. The Mollettes reared a large family, almost all of whom became school teachers. One son, John B. Molette, served Johnson and Martin counties in the Kentucky legislature for three terms. Mrs. Mollette was affectionately knows as "Aunt Emma". Always ready to praise her, Mrs. Mollette's neighbors often declared that, "If there ever was a good woman, Aunt Emma surely is one." Throughout her husband's illness, even through Aunt Emma had to be at his side at all hours of the day and night, she never lost her capacity for greeting her family and her neighbors and friends with a smile and a word of kindness which everyone knew was straight from her heart. Mrs. Mollette is survived by three sons, Fred Mollette, Meally, Ky., John B. Mollette, Lorado, W. Va.; Burns Offutt Mollette, Columbus, Ohio; four daughters, Mrs. Lizzie Colvin, Thealka; Mrs. Stella Fletcher, Books Camp; Mrs. Amanda Hollbrook, Paintsville; Mrs. Grance Preston [Grace Preston], Williamsport; a brother, Grover Cline, Stidham, Ky., and a sister, Mrs. Liza Williamson, Inez.
