When Tony Dale's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a miner working for Consolidation Coal Company in Van Lear, Johnson County, that his closest relative was Mary Dale of Van Lear, and that he was born April 1, 1874. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had black eyes and black hair. Not being able to read or write, he signed the card with an "X."

She married (1) SCOTT MARTIN about 1921. She married (2) HENRY WORIC WILLIAMS, son of THOMAS SANFORD WILLIAMS and MELISSA STAFFORD. He was born April 18, 1862 in Kentucky, died February 19, 1944 in Louisa, Lawrence County, Kentucky, and is buried in Pinehill Cemetery in Lawrence County, Kentucky.

     "Last rites will be held this afternoon (Thursday) [August 3, 1944] at the Freewill Baptist Church for Sarah M. Williams, 69, widow of H. W. Williams, who passed away early Wednesday morning at the Paintsville Hospital. She had suffered a stroke last February and had never fully recovered. Mrs. Williams was born at East Point to the late Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Pelphrey. At the age of 52 she was united in marriage to Scott Martin who died a few years later. She was then married to H.W. Williams who died last February. They made their home in Louisa and at the time of his death she had had a stroke and was a patient in a Louisa hospital. Since her illness last winter she has made her home in West Van Lear with a brother, Milt Pelphrey. She leaves a large number of friends and relatives who will be saddened by her death.

     "The Big Sandy River has claimed its first bathing victim of the season. Clifford Blair, age about 21, was drowned last Sunday afternoon when he went in bathing near Van Lear at the mouth of Millers Creek opposite Limestone Cliff. Few particulars could be learned of the tragedy as only two small boys were eye witnesses to the drowning, but it seems that young Blair was unable to swim, and getting beyond his depth sank beneath the surface and failed to rise again. Efforts to resuscitate the man proved unavailing. Blair was a son of Harry Blair, of Denver. Besides his parents he is survived by a young wife and a two weeks old babe."

When Milton Arthur Pelphrey's World War I draft registration card was filled out on June 5, 1917 in Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in West Van Lear, Kentucky, that he was single with a dependent father and mother, and that he was born April 21, 1892 in Barnetts Creek, Kentucky. He was found to be tall and slender, and he had dark brown eyes and black hair.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website and a photo of their headstone shows that Milton A. Pelphrey lived from 1891 to 1963, and was buried in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville, and that Ina Pelphrey lived from 1888 to 1973, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to his obituary, Milt Pelphrey (age 71), son of the late James Milton and Manda Conley Pelphrey, was a World War 1 veteran, a retired C & O Railway engineer, and was resident of West Van Lear for the 42 years prior to his death. He was born April 21, 1891 in Johnson County, died suddenly at home on February 24, 1963, and was buried in Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Staffordsville. He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Hettie Ina McFarland Pelphrey; 1 step-son, Virgil Porter; 2 brothers, and John Pelphrey (of West Van Lear) and Dan Pelphrey (Nellis, West Virginia).       "Samuel Webb, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dugan Webb, who died in an Army Hospital in Germany Dec 14 (1946) from accidental wounds, was buried here Monday afternoon (Jan. 13, 1947) with full military honors. Pvt. Webb was shot in the right chest and spine when an Army buddy accidentally discharged a gun while cleaning it. He was transferred to an Army hospital after receiving first aid treatment but died shortly after arrival. Pvt. Webb, known to his many Paintsville friends as "Little Dugin" worked for the C & O railroad as a telegraph operator for two years and was the third trick operator, working from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. in the Paintsville Depot. He entered service Jan. 29, 1946, and after receiving basic training was sent to the Army of Occupation in Germany. He was former student at Meade Memorial school at Williamsport. Born in Paintsville August 2, 1927, he was well and favorably known here and well loved by both young and old, and his untimely death came as a distinct shock to all. Besides his parents, he is survived by four brothers, Lowell, Milo, Elwood, and Phillip, all at home. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon (Jan. 13, 1947) at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Foster Riggsby and Rev. J. F. Armes officiating. Interment was in the Melvin Hall cemetery at Davis Branch by the Johnson Post No. 117, American Legion."
      "Private First Class Samuel Webb was born August 2, 1927 at Paintsville, Ky. The first of seven sons of Dugan Webb and Eunice Arms Webb. He departed this life in Landsburg, Germany, Dec. 14, 1946 while serving his country. Age 19 years, 4 months and twelve days. "Buddy" or "Dugan" as he was often called by those who knew him, attended the Meade Memorial School and for two years was employed by the C & O Railway as telegraph operator. He entered the United States Army to serve his country Jan. 29, 1946. To know "Buddy" was to love him. He lived a short life but a clean, honest one. His thoughts were always of a serious nature even tho he was young. Buddy was affectionate to his mother continually showing his love for her. He was an obedient son to his father and mother and always the loving, kind brother to his smaller brothers at home. We realize that the Lord has a plan for this world and is now making his preparations for the great reunion of all and this is only part of God's plan. Buddy gave his life for his country and greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. He leaves to mourn his passing father and mother and four brothers, Lowell, Elwood, Milo and Phillip, all at home and two infant brothers, preceded him in death."

      According to his obituary, Lowell Webb (age 78), son of the late Herman Dugan and Eunice Arms Webb, was a bookkeeper of coal company. He was born March 6, 1929 in Johnson County, died January 8, 2008 at home in Lexington, and was buried in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery in Staffordsville. He was survived by his wife, Margaret Boyd Webb; 1 daughter, Susan Marie Webb (of Lexington); and 3 brothers, Milo Webb (North Carolina), Herman Webb (North Carolina), and Phillip Webb (Paintsville).
