COLLINS - My father, Arthur Collins, was born March 1, 1915 in Johnson County, KY, the eldest son of Francis "Frank" Marion and Victoria Pennington Collins. His older sister, Fannie, was born in 1912. Ethel and Kelly followed. Frank and Victoria were loving parents who struggled to bring up their children in the rugged hills of Johnson County.
"Frank worked as a coal miner until his death in a mining explosion at Pond Creek, KY, in 1922, at the age of 32. His widow was left with four young children ages 10, 7, 5 and 2. Three short years later, sadness came to the children again when their mother, Victoria, contracted tuberculosis and died leaving the four children orphans.
"The children spent the rest of their remaining childhood living with aunts, uncles, grandparents and neighbors working the farms and performing chores to earn their food and lodging. Tragedy hit this family a third time when their sister, Fannie, died from tuberculosis when she was only 17. Arthur describes his older sister as a beautiful, kind and sensitive young woman.
"Ethel married young and had one son, Kenneth Collins, before she was stricken with tuberculosis and died at the age of 22.
"Both Kelly and Arthur served their county in WWII. Arthur served in the Air Force from June 1943-January 1946. He served in the Islands with the 305th Fighter Control Sqdn., and also served in the Tinian Islands. He earned the Bronze Star, Marksman, Sharpshooter and Good Conduct medals. Kelly entered the Army Cav. and served in the European Theater, working with the infantry from 1942-46.
"After the war Kelly and Arthur settled in Greenup County, KY. They married and reared families there. Kelly worked in construction and as a achool bus driver where he was loved and respected by students, teachers and parents. He passed away at 54. He was survived by two children, Kelly Jr. and Ruby Riffe.
"Arthur was employed and retired from Armco, Inc. and resides on a farm in rural Greenup County where he was reared by his father and his late mother, Doreen Linkous Collins.
"His hobby and current vocation is raising fox hounds which he breeds and ships to buyers across the country. He and his wife, Wanda Castle Cook Collins, raise a garden, can and freeze the produce and keep several head of cattle. At this time his father is 84 and very active.
"He is the sole surviving sibling. He returns to Johnson County frequently to visit friends and relatives and to tend the gravesites of his beloved family. He especially returns before Memorial Day to clear the graves at Sycamore Branch of Daniels Creek. He has been joined by his nephews, Kenneth and Kelly Jr. and his grandson, Vincent Cochran.
