He had been shot at close range above the heart. An examining physician placed the time of death between 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. The body was found by three children as they walked towards town. He was a representative of the Commonwealth Life Insurance Company and had been transferred to the Carter County area from Paintsville. Deputy Sheriff James Jackson, a neighbor of Rice in the McGuire subdivision at Grayson, said Rice had $500 in his possession when he left his home Friday, but no money was found on the body. The section of Robin Road on which the body was found is a deserted area with no houses nearby. A .38 caliber pistol which Rice carried for protection while traveling that area was six feet from the body and had been fired one time. It was to be sent to Ashland for fingerprint test. A Grayson physician and Kentucky State Policeman said he had been shot from a distance of two or three feet. There was no blood nor evidence of disturbance inside Rice’s automobile. Tracks appeared to show the auto had been moved back and forth several times, according to the Carter County officials. State Trooper Don Laferty quoted Mrs. Rice as saying her husband had carried a pistol since he had been followed several times in the Hitchins area. He had told her he knew who his followers were, but would not name them for fear it would worry her, Laferty said. Coroner Walter Gee said a definite possibility of foul play exists in the case. According to Laferty, Rice usually a punctual man was scheduled to be in Morehead, Saturday, but called his manager, Howard Patrick, to report he had collections to make before his meeting. Both Patrick and Mrs. Rice were disturbed when Rice failed to return home Friday night. He was last reported seen alive in his car in front of the Hitchins Post Office at 4:00 p.m. Friday. An unidentified man was then in the auto with him. Three short cigarette butts found at the scene where the body was found indicated that Rice had been there for some time. An inquest into the fatal shooting will be held today, according to Carter County Coroner Walter Gee. The inquest was originally slated for Monday, but was postponed because of the Labor Day holiday. A fingerprint report on the pistol found beside the body should be available today, he said. Rice had worked for the VanHoose Lumber Company here after his discharge from the Army. He entered the Army during World War II as a private and held the rack of Lieutenant at the time of his separation from service. He was married to Cloteen Clark Rice, daughter of the late Logan Clark of the Daniels Creek section, and Maggie Clark Morgan, now of California. She was employed at the Hager Drug Store here before her marriage. Rice was the father of two children, Kenneth Rice and Bobby Rice, both at home. He was born in Johnson County, September 28, 1919, a son of Robert and the late Sally Leslie Rice. He attended Paintsville schools where he was an outstanding student. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church, Paintsville Lodge 381 F&A.M, Royal Arch Mason Chapter 131, and the Knight Templars No. 43.
