HENRY CONNELLY JR., son of HENRY CONNELLY and ANN MACGREGOR, was born December 1, 1787 in Guilford County, North Carolina, and died September 8, 1859 in Fennimore, Grant County, Wisconsin. He married SARAH PHILLIPS, August 20, 1810 in Clay County, Kentucky. She was born August 16, 1791 in Georgia.

Notes: Henry and Sarah lived in Floyd County, Kentucky, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near Henry's father and other family members, for most of their early lives. Henry served in the Army during the War of 1812 from November 10, 1814 until May 10, 1815. He served as a private in a Company of Kentucky Militia commanded by Captain L. P. Higdon. Sarah was later granted a pension of eight dollars a month because of his service.

According to Sarah, they were married by a Baptist minister named Spencer Adams, although no official record of the marriage was ever found. Henry's father, Captain Henry Connelly, died in 1840 and in March or April of 1844, Henry, Sarah and their four youngest children moved "out west" to Wisconsin. Upon arrival in the Wisconsin Territory - Wisconsin wasn't a state until 1848 - Henry filed his claim to 40 acres in the southwestern part of the Territory. On January 22, 1848 he bought a joining 40 acres from Francis Lewis McKensie for the sum of fifty dollars. The farm was located just across the street from the Jacob Borah Cemetery where Henry and Sarah are both buried. Many legal documents concerning the Connellys - his gravestone says "Connely" - are recorded in the Grant County Court House.

"I remember him very well. He married, in North Carolina, a Miss Joynes. He lived to a great age. His home was at the head of the State-road Fork of the Licking River, in what is now Magoffin County, Kentucky, where I often visited him when a lad. He said his grandmother was a Pennsylvania Dutch woman. I have seen him at my father's house, in Salyersville, and have heard him tell much of the early history of our family, but as I did not write it down at the time, what he said became confused in my mind, and it has taken much labor to correct many errors into which I had fallen. I was too young to fully comprehend the importance of what he said, and I had not then learned to write well enough to make a record. I was at religious services held in his house in 1865, and he lived some years after that."

HENRY JEFFERSON CONLEY, son of DAVID CONLEY and MARY "POLLY" HOWES, was born October 7, 1829 in Floyd County, Kentucky, and died before 1900. He married MAHALA JANE DAVIS, daughter of ELIAS DAVIS and ELIZABETH CURTIS, June 12, 1848 in Johnson County Kentucky. She was born April 13, 1832 in Floyd County, Kentucky, died March 13, 1914 in Oakview, Boyd County, Kentucky, and is buried in Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky.

Notes: Information on this family can be found on page 517 of "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society. According to that book, Henry Johnson Conley was born October 9, 1830, died in 1883 in Webbville, Kentucky, and married Mahala Davis - daughter of Elias Davis - on June 15, 1948. She was born April 13, 1832, and died March 13, 1914.

Information on this family can be also be found in the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. On page 147 of that book it says:

No. 1. N. RICHARD DAVIS - B. 1-6-1773; M. to Mary Fugett [Mary Fugate].
Children -

No. 2. N. Robert Davis.

No. 3. N. ? (Frank Davis) - said to have been thrown by a horse and killed, his head striking a log.
No. 4. N. Henry Davis.
No. 5. N. Alfred Davis.
No. 6. N. Rachael Davis.
No. 7. N. James Davis.
No. 8. N. Elias Davis.

Richard Davis is claimed to have been in the Revolution by some of his descendants. It is doubtful that he was in the Revolution but possible that he could have been in the War of 1812. The old family Bible which has been passed down through the Bracken R. Davis branch of the family and now in the possession of Irene Davis at Meally, Kentucky, gives a Richard R. Davis as being born January 6, 1773, and died at the age of 110. If this were correct, and it appears that it is, since this Bible is 152 years old and has been rebound at one time in plain leather, such as is used in harness shops today, then the conjecture that Mr. Davis was a Revolulutionary soldier would be incorrect. For those of the Davis family desiring to join the Daughter of the American Revolution and other patriotic organizations it might be added here that they are eligible through Abiud Fairchild whose daughter married James Curtis and had a child Elizabeth who married Elias Davis.

From the number of names of James and McHenry that have drifted down through the family it would appear that Richard Davis' father was James McHenry Davis. However, this is only a supposition. It is given here for the reason that almost every book of southwest Virginia makes mention of James Davis acquiring 1,300 acres of land in Augusta County, Virginia, and patented March 19, 1748, which he called "Davis Fancy." Mrs. A. P. Childers (No. 100) states that the father of Richard Davis was James McHenry Davis.

Richard R. Davis is said to have been killed at the crossing of Clinch River, although the Bible mentioned above shows that he lived to be 110 years old, which would appear to be correct as many of this family reached the eighties and nineties.

Below are the references, which have been found concerning Richard Davis.

Richard Davis' wife seems to have been married twice as Elias Davis had a half-brother David Conley who had children: Elizabeth that married a Meade; Lydia; and David Jr. The Bible referred to above has the following names and dates: David H. Conley son of David Conley and Mary his wife born January 3, 1812; Mary who married David Conley Jr., born July 8, 1824.

On page 150 it says:

Mr. and Mrs. Davis first went to housekeeping on Colvin Branch near Fish Trap Church, where they resided the greater part of their married life. They also lived for a time with their son Davidson near Concord Church, and in their old days moved to Morgan County for a year, after which they broke up housekeeping and lived with their daughter Mary.

Mr. Davis is said to have visited his people in Virginia on various occasions, but just in what county they lived has never been learned. He was a good, hard-working man, and very industrious. Although he had a quick temper, he was prominent in the family gatherings in the neighborhood, and is said to have been an excellent "Virginia-reeler." Sometimes he would let his disposition of the mind get away with him. On one occasion, when a sheep strayed from his flock and was some trouble to get back, he pushed it over a cliff. However, his temper in no way interfered with the esteem and respect in which he was held by the pioneers of Johnson County. He was given more to loquacity than the average person but he had not the stamina of Mrs. Davis who had very decided opinios, and when pressed for an answer, there was not any question as to where she stood or felt about any subject.

Mr. Davis' death was caused from the infirmities of age, combined with lagrippe and a slight stroke of paralysis. He broke down and could never recuperate. He was so determined in his ways and his will-power so strong and set on carrying on in life, that at the time, he refused aid and his family could not get hime to bed, with the result that he died two or three days later. He is buried in the family graveyard on the Blanton farm near Fish Trap.

Mrs. Davis was noted for her excellent memory. She joined the church just one month before she died. She had been visiting her daughter Anna VanHoose and took sick. It was at this time that she expressed her hope of a brighter life, even calling in some of her children to tell them of her hope in Christ. Thinking that she had sufficiently recovered to return home, she undertook to go to her home at Fish Trap. Although eighty-four years old, she made the trip on horseback, but died the same night of that day. It is said that she talked until the last moment of her life.

The tax list for 1837 of Floyd County shows that Mr. Davis had 100 acres of land on Paint Creek.

On page 158 it says:

No. 29. N. MAHALA DAVIS - B. 4-13-1832; D. 3-13-1914; M. to Henry Conley, B. 10-9-1829, D. 6-?-1879, S. of David and Polly (Howes) Conley.
Children -

No. 113. N. Mary Ann Conley - born September 1, 1850 (?49) - married a Fisher.

No. 114. N. B. F. Conley - born February 4, 1852 (?51).
No. 115. N. Paulina Conley.

No. 116. N. Harrison B. Conley - born February 3, 1855.
No. 117. N. Irene Conley.
No. 118. N. Redmond Conley.
No. 119. N. Henrietta (Rit) Conley.
No. 120. N. Lizzie Conley.
No. 121. N. Arch Conley.
No. 122. N. Ollie Conley.

No. 123. N. Rose Conley - married a Withero.

Mahala and Henry Conley lived for a time near Red Bush and Manila, Kentucky, later moving to Greenup or Carter County. From there they moved over on the Scioto River near Portsmouth, Ohio, and after about eight years moved to Webbville, Kentucky, where Mr. Conley died.

Their descendants reside in and near Catlettsburg and Ashland, Kentucky.

Henry Jefferson Conley's sister, Polly, married Mahala Davis' brother, Bracken. Mahala Davis was also the sister of Mary Elizabeth Davis.

Elias Davis was the brother of Alfred Davis.

Henry Conley was a veteran of the Civil War.

According to his death certificate, James M. Davis died March 5, 1916 in Paintsville from "Senility - worn out oll over." Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birth date as January 4, 1828, his marital status as widowed, his occupation as farmer, his parents as Elias Davis (b. Virginia) and Betsie Curtis (b. Kentucky), the informant as C. C. Price of Paintsville, and the burial place as "his home."

According to Joseph Eugene Conley of Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, Henry J. Conley was born October 9, 1829 in Floyd County, and died July 21, 1883 in Carter County. He married Mahala Jane Davis, daughter of Elias Davis and Elizabeth Curtis, January 15, 1848 in Johnson County. She was born April 13, 1832 in Floyd County, and died March 13, 1914 in Boyd County.

According to descendant Heather Conley Lee, Henry Jefferson Conley was born October 9, 1829 in Floyd County (in a part that is now Johnson County), died July 21, 1883 in Willard, Carter County. He married Mahala Jane Davis, daughter of Elias and Elizabeth Curtis Davis, June 15, 1948 in Johnson County. She was born April 13, 1832 in Floyd County (now Johnson County), and died March 13, 1914 in Boyd County.

There is no real proof that Henry J. Conley's middle name is Jefferson, although an email was received from descendant Joyce Loegel that said that she was in possesion of the family Bible and his name is recorded as Henry Jefferson Conley there. According to that Bible, Henry Jefferson Conley was born October 7, 1829, and Mahala Conley was born April 13, 1832. Henry Retty's name is spelled this way rather than Henrietta. Henry Retty was born July 24, 1861. Efforts to contact Joyce for more information went unanswered.

Henry Jefferson Conley was in the 22nd Kentucky Infantry in the Civil War.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Henry Conley married Mahala Davis on June 12, 1848 in Johnson County Kentucky.

According to her death certificate, Mahaley Davis Conley died March 18, 1914 in Oakview, Boyd County, Kentucky, from "Lagrippe." Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Kentucky, her birth date as "Apr day not known, 1832," her marital status as widowed, her parents as Elias Davis (b. Kentucky) and "(Not Known) Hows," the informant as Arch Conley of Unity, Kentucky, and her burial place as Ashland Cemetery.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Mahaley Conley died March 18, 1914 in Boyd County at the age of 81.
