The winter of 1862 was cold. According to the Gearheart family story, the soldiers tore down the fences and used them for firewood. When the soldiers broke camp they left a dead man lying on the property. The Gearhearts made a coffin and buried the unknown Civil War soldier in the Joseph Gearheart Cemetery.

She was born in December of 1879 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, died July 11, 1934 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, and is buried in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood, Boyd County, Kentucky. Rufus Penix married (2) REBECCA MORRIS.

Lillie's birth date is listed as December of 1879 in the 1880 census, but it's January 1, 1880 on her death certificate.

Rufus and Lillie had a baby boy who was stillborn in Boyd County on March 11, 1916. They had another child that was stillborn on March 22, 1920, also in Boyd County. This child's sex wasn't listed on the death certificate. They had another stillborn male on October 30, 1922.

According to his death certificate, Geo Harrison Francis died September 17, 1935 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, from Brights disease. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Pike County, Kentucky, his birth date as October 4, 1851, his marital status as widowed, his occupation as farmer, his parents as Andy Francis (b. Virginia) and Elizabeth Hopkins (b. unknown), the informant as Marion Francis of Ashland, and the burial place as Bloomington, Kentucky.

When Rufus B. Penix's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Catlettsburg, Boyd County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a merchant in Ashland, Boyd County, that his closest relative was Lilley Penix of Ashland, and that he was born June 21, 1877. He was found to be tall and slender, and he had blue eyes and gray hair.

Information found on findagrave.com and photos of their headstones shows that Rufus B. Penix lived from 1877 to 1969, and was buried in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood, Boyd County, Kentucky, and that Lillie Penix lived from 1880 to 1934, and was buried in the same cemetery.

According to Social Security death record transcripts, Rufus Penix was born June 21, 1877, and died in January of 1969. He received his Social Security card prior to 1951 in Kentucky, and his last place of residence was in Deland, Volusia County, Florida.

According to West Virginia death record transcripts, Rufus B. Penix died January 21, 1969 in Cabell County. His parents are listed as James H. Penix and Melvina Crace, and he was married to Rebecca Morris at the time of his death.

According to her death certificate, Lillie Francis Penix died July 11, 1934 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, from myocarditis. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as McGoffin County, Kentucky, her birth date as January 1, 1880, her marital status as married, her husband as R. B. Penix, her parents as G. H. Francis (b. Pike County, Kentucky) and Cynthia Brown (b. Kentucky), the informant as R. B. Penix of Pike County, Kentucky, and the burial place as Dixon Cemetery in Ashland.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Lillie Penix died July 11, 1934 in Boyd County at the age of 54.

According to his obituary, Hager Elmon McCarty (age 38), son of John and Louise Coldiron McCarty and a resident of Oil Springs, went to a roadhouse about 2 miles west of Paintsville on Friday, the 4th of November in 1948, and was found dead in bed at 3 o'clock the following morning. The causes of his death were unknown. He was born in Boyd County, married Hazel Williams of Low Gap in 1939, and was buried in the family cemetery. He had been living in Oil Springs for the 2 months prior to his death. He was survived by his wife; 3 daughters, Garnett Elizabeth McCarty, Eleanor McCarty, and Joan McCarty; and the following brothers and sisters; Jessie McCarty (of Chillicothe, Ohio) and Cameron McCarty (Pound, Virginia).
