GEORGE WASHINGTON CONLEY, son of WILLIAM W. CONLEY and ANNA MCCARTY, was born in June of 1832 in Floyd County, Kentucky. He married NANCY GULLETT, daughter of CHRISTOPHER GULLETT and PATSY BAILEY, in October of 1852 in Kentucky. She was born in April of 1831 in Morgan County, Kentucky.

Notes: Nancy Gullett was the sister of Evaline Gullett, Artessa Gullett, and Mary "Polly" Gullett.

The birth dates of the children don't align because of the different sources that they come from.

That George Washington Conley is the son of William W. Conley is based on pure speculation. He is found living with that family in the 1850 census, and he marries Nancy Gullett, who's family is living next to the William Conley family that year. On Michael Nestor's website, Michael claims that George Washington Conley is actually Jacob Washington Conley and the son of Henry Conley and Nancy Rice. William's family is in house #605 and Henry's in house #614 in the 1850 census.

From Michael Nestor on March 1, 2014:

"Jerry,

"First, thanks for all the work you have and are putting into the Conley research, and I hope that you don't mind that I'm using some of your info on my website. I've been working on this family for litteraly 40 years, and have been compiling a large website, with perhaps 500 pages on the Conley's.

"A few points:

"1. I notice that you have listed George Washington Conley (aka Jacob), b Jun 1832, as a son of William W. Conley. This makes sense if one only looks at the 1850 census, where Washington Conley is listed with William's family. Apparently he was just living with them, and the following shows he was the son of Henry Conley, and I see that you noted that I listed him as such. Henry had a male of the right age in the 1840 census, and William W. didn't The tax lists are consistent with this: 1840 Floyd Co census, p 282, Henry Conley, 111001-01001. (1 son b 1830-35 - George/Jacob; and 2 sons b 1835-40 - David H. and James E. and an unidentified female, b ca 1830-35)
1840 Floyd Co tax list, p 6, line 24, William W. Conley, 600 acres on Pigeon, 1 WM >21, 1 child 7-17. (Rachel)
1841 Floyd Co tax list, p 2, line 2, William Conley, 400 acres on Pigeon, 1 WM > 21, 1 child 7-17. (Rachel)
1842 Floyd Co tax list, p 4, line 43, William Conley, 1000 acres on Pigeon Cr, 1 WM > 21, 2 child 7-17. (Rachel and Elizabeth)
1840 Floyd Co tax list, p 6, line 3, Henry Conley Jr, 75 acres on S.R. Fork, 1 WM > 21, 2 child 7-17. (George/Jacob; David H. and James E. too young; and the female, b 1830-35 in the 1840 census.)
1842 Floyd Co tax list, p 4, line 38, Henry J. Conley, 100 acres on Licking Waters, 1 WM > 21, 1 child 7-17. (George/Jacob; David H. and James E. too young; the female, b 1830-35, who was listed in the 1840 census, apparently died by now)

"2. Another piece of evidence in the estate of Henry's son James E. Conley, b ca 1839-41:
1861, 12 Mar: Magoffin Co Will Bk 1, p 9: James E. Conley estate, Henry Conley administrator. Mentions Henry Conley, David H. Conly, J.W. Conly.
(these are James' father and 2 brothers; it would be highly irregular for the estate to include a cousin's name)

"3. George Washington Conley = Jacob Washington Conley = J.W. Conley = Washington Conley
He used the names interchangeably - see following records. So it's just an arbitrary choice whether one calls him Jacob or George.

"3. Other info showing Jacob (J.W.) and George are the same person, the birth and death info for his 2 youngest children:
#4. (dau) Conley, b 22 Nov 1856 Floyd Co (parents George W. Conley and Nancy Gullett, res State Road Fork), d 22 Dec 1856 Floyd Co (parents Washington and Nancy Conley)
#5. Sarah Elizabeth (?A. or J.) Conley, b 21 Nov 1857 Floyd Co (parents J.W. Conley and Nancy Gullett, res State Fork).

"3. Possible evidence that Henry J. Conley's middle name was Jacob:
1841, 11 Nov: Floyd Co Deed Bk D, p 461: Jacob Conley signed deed of land from Edmund Conley Sr to David Conley. (it seems unlikely that a 9 year old boy would sign a deed, but there is no other likely candidate for this Jacob, unless this was Jacob Washington Conley's father Henry J., with a middle name of Jacob)."

Nancy Gullett was reportedly the daughter of Christopher Gullett and Patsy Bailey, but it appears that either the ages listed in the 1850 census are wrong, or Nancy's mother was actually someone else. In that census, Christopher is 70 years old, Patsy is 30, and Nancy is 20. The ages could be a couple of years off, as the census reports are not entirely error free. No luck was had in trying to find a birth or death record of Nancy but on her brother William's death certificate his parents are listed as Christy Gullett and Patsey Bailey.

PHOEBE FAIRCHILD, daughter of NANCY CONLEY and ASA J. FAIRCHILD, was born September 30, 1823 in Jennies Creek, Floyd County, Kentucky, and died October 7, 1875 in Riceville, Johnson County, Kentucky. She married ANDREW JACKSON "BLACK JACK" RICE, son of JOHN RICE and NANCY DAVIS, September 21, 1844 in Johnson County, Kentucky. He was born November 14, 1822 in Jennies Creek, Floyd County, Kentucky, and died about 1884 in Riceville, Johnson County, Kentucky. Andrew Jackson Rice married (2) NANCY JANE FAIRCHILD, daughter of ELI W. FAIRCHILD and MALISSA JANE MAY, January 20, 1877 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was born December 23, 1850 in Johnson County, Kentucky, and died July 1, 1917 in Jennies Creek, Johnson County, Kentucky. Nancy Jane Fairchild married (2) ANDREW JACKSON HACKWORTH.

Notes: Information on this family can be found on pages 367 & 368 of "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society.

Information on this family can also be found on pages 449 and 452 of the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. In that book it says that John Rice was born in 1786 in Virginia and married Nancy Davis, daughter of John Davis. She died in 1854. Their children were Joseph Rice (who died young), Martin R. Rice, Malinda Rice (married Payne Patrick), Samuel Rice, George Wash Rice, Mahala Rice (married Johnson Adams), William Rice, and Andrew Jackson (Black Jack) Rice.
It also says, on pages 449 & 450:

"Mr. and Mrs. John Rice first settled on what was later known as the Sam Hale farm on Middle Creek, when they came to the Big Sandy. From there they moved to the head of Jennie's Creek.
"In 1837 Mr. Rice had, on Jennie's Creek, 350 acres of land, 4 slaves, and 400 head of cattle (see Floyd County tax list).      "It is said that John Rice was a great fiddler. There is a tradition in the family that Mr. Rice was captured when a young man by some Indians, who took him to their camps in Tennessee to make music for them. They later released him and he returned to his home, which was said to have been in the neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia. He later with his two brothers and sister came to Kentucky. It was near Cumberland Gap that he met and married Miss Davis. They are buried on the head of Jennie's Creek.
"Through an error the name of Cynthia Rice was not included in the above list of children of John and Nancy Rice. It should be added thereto. She married Robert Prater, a son of John Prater, and they lived in Bloomington, Kentucky. Robert and Cynthia Prater had the following children: John, Wiley, William, and Mary Elizabeth. The sons all live in Missouri. Mary Elizabeth married Captain Jeff Prater.
"The last one is living and is known as "Aunt Lizzie" Prater. She has many friends in Eastern Kentucky. For many years she was in charge of the Prater Hotel, known over the entire State as the best place to get good things to eat. In years past, traveling men made an effort to reach the Prater Hotel for the good things to eat and the comfortable homelike surroundings. 'Aunt Lizzie' was always on the job. After the death of Captain Prater she lived at the hotel, until a few years ago when she went to housekeeping at the age of seventy-three. Not long ago she underwent a serious operation that almost cost her her life, but she is now as spry as a woman much younger than she.
"Doing good has been her life work. Her money and her time are always spent freely in helping others and her noble Christian life can be seen in her happy countenance and putting it in her own words: 'The Lord has spared my life for some purpose and I am thankful that I am still able to live and meet my friends.'
"This grand old woman is a valuable asset to any community and she will leave her family and friends the perfect satisfaction of a long life of usefulness, spent in the service of her friends and neighbors. Everybody knows her and everybody loves her. 'Aunt Lizzie' is an aunt of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Bailey of Paintsville."

On page 452 it says that Andrew Jackson (Black Jack) Rice was born on November 14, 1822, and married Phoebe Fairchilds on September 19, 1844. She was born September 30, 1823. Rice, Julia Rice (born August 10, 1879, married Hargus Conley, live in Riceville), Lou Emma Rice (born November 25, 1881, died unmarried), and Myrtle Rice.

According to Joseph Eugene Conley, "The community of Riceville gets it's name from Andrew Jackson (Black Jack) Rice. At one time Andrew owned the whole of Riceville and Green Rock. About fifteen months after the death of Phoebe, Andrew instructed his sons to look after the farm while he went away on business. When he returned home they were some what dismayed to meet his new bride, their 1st cousin Nancy Fairchild daughter of Phoebe's brother Eli W. Fairchild. On July 2, 1880 Andrew deed part of his property for the foundation of the Sugar Grove Bottom School, perhaps the first school in the Jennies Creek area. Andrew was said to carry his money in his saddle bags and at times they were so heavy they could hardly be loaded on and off his horse. After the death of Andrew in 1884 Nancy remarried Andrew Hackworth."
