In a letter from Edward R. Hazelett he said 'I knew Sam Conley well. He was a cousin to my mother. I went to the hospital to see Sam, but he could not recognize me, in the summer of 1965. In June 1964, Sam went with me on two or three trips, showing me where a lot of the historical events happened. He carried his walking cane on his arm. He had one good eye, but walked well, and, I believe, raised a 2-acre garden that summer. Sam was a friendly, kind man and he knew a lot of history of the families of the region.
