JOHN M. CONLEY, son of HENRY CONLEY and REBECCA BLAIR, was born October 18, 1843 in Morgan County, Kentucky, and died November 16, 1914 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky. He married SARAH MATILDA LONG, daughter of LEVI MORGAN LONG and ELIZABETH "BETSY" VANOVER, February 22, 1866 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was born December 15, 1844 in Russell County, Virginia, died August 8, 1922 in Junction City, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Junction City, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Information on this family can also be found on page 141 of the book "The Founding of Harman's Station" by William Elsey Connelley. In that book it says "John. Born in 1845. Married Matilda, daughter of Morgan Long, of North Carolina, who lived a short time in Paintsville after the Civil War. He was the largest man in Johnson County, but not in the least corpulent. He was above six feet, probably six feet four, broad shoulders, and of fine form. He was a man of immense strength. Lives now in Paintsville."

Information on this family can also be found on page 127 of the book "Johnson County, Kentucky: A History of the County, and Genealogy of Its People Up to the Year 1927" by Mitchell Hall. In that book it says only that John Conley married Matilda Long.

In the 1900 census, Sarah Long Conley says that she has given birth to 7 children 5 are still living. The 5 that lived past 1900 are Elizabeth, Rebecca, Samuel, Mary, and Newton, meaning that Lindsey and Franklin both died prior to 1900.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, John Conley married Sarah Matilda Long on February 22, 1866 in Johnson County.

According to his death certificate, John Conley died November 16, 1914 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, and the cause of death is listed as "Accidetally [sic] killed while sawing timber." Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Kentucky, his birth date as October 18, 1843, his marital status as married, his occupation as farmer, his parents as Henry Conley (b. Virginia) and Rebecca Blair (b. "don't know"), and the informant as Sarah Conley of Hager Hill, Kentucky.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, John Conley died November 16, 1914 in Johnson County at the age of 71.

According to her death certificate, Matilda Conley died August 8, 1922 in Junction City, Johnson County, Kentucky, from apoplexy. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Virginia, her birth date as December 15, 1844, her marital status as widowed, her parents as Morgan Long (b. Virginia) and Betsey Vanover (b. Virginia), the informant as Sam Conley of Riceville, Kentucky, and the burial place as Junction City.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Matilda Conley died August 8, 1922 in Johnson County at the age of 77.

On page 21 of the 1850 census for District 54 in Russell County, Virginia (dated November 15, 1850), Morgan Long is listed as the head of the household for house #1501, he's a farmer, born in Grayson County, Virginia, and he's 32 years old. Also listed are Elisabeth (born in South Carolina, age 28), Milbourn (born in North Carolina, age 9), Henry (born in Washington County, Virginia, age 7), Joel (born in Grayson County, Virginia, age 5), Matilda (born in Russell County, Virginia, age 2), and Mary L. (born in Russell County, Virginia, age 2 months).

On page 25 of the 1860 census for Wise County, Virginia (dated June 20, 1860), Levi M. Long is listed as the head of the household for house #166, he's a farmer, born in Virginia, and he's 41 years old. Also listed are Elizabeth (born in North Carolina, age 40), Heny [sic] (born in Virginia, age 16), Joel (born in Virginia, age 15), Matilda (born in Virginia, age 12), Lucinda (born in Virginia, age 10), John (born in Virginia, age 7), Floyd (born in Virginia, age 5), Calvin (born in Virginia, age 3), and Ira (born in Virginia, age 10 months).

On page 10 of the 1870 census for Precinct 8 in Floyd County, Kentucky (dated June 28, 1870), John Conley is listed as the head of the household for house #62, he's a farmer, born in Kentucky, and he's 24 years old. Also listed are Sarah M. (born in Virginia, age 22), Lindsey (born in Kentucky, age 3), and Elizabeth (born in Kentucky, age 1).

IRA NEWTON CONLEY, son of JOHN M. CONLEY and SARAH MATILDA LONG, was born January 31, 1885 in Johnson County, Kentucky, and died December 7, 1923 in Manco, Pike County, Kentucky, and is buried in Hager-Stafford Cemetery in Hager Hill, Johnson County, Kentucky. He married ELIZA ELLEN LITTERAL, daughter of WILLIAM HENDERSON LITTERAL and MATILDA M. STANLEY, September 30, 1903 in Johnson County, Kentucky. She was born August 29, 1885 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, died February 7, 1956 in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, and is buried in Hart Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky.

Note: William Henderson Litteral was the son of James Wesley Litteral and Elizabeth Louisa "Eliza" Pace.

Newt was involved in a dispute with a man by the last name of VanHoose. The dispute was reported to be over a problem with Newt's children leaving a mess in the outhouse. VanHoose told Newt that if it happened again, he would kill him. It happened again so VanHoose shot and killed Newt Conley. Coincidentally, Sam Conley (Newt's brother) is buried next to a VanHoose. Also, Newt and his brother Sam were married to sisters Eliza and Elizabeth Litteral.

When Ira Newton Conley's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a coal miner working for Consolidation Coal in Van Lear, Johnson County, that his closest relative was "Eliza Conley - wife" of Van Lear, and that he was born January 31, 1885. He was found to be tall and stout, and he had brown eyes and black hair.

According to his death certificate, I. N. Conley died December 7, 1923 in Manco, Pike County, Kentucky, when he was "Murdered (Shot)." Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Johnson County, Kentucky, his age as "about 44," his marital status as married, his occupation as coal miner, his parents as John Conley (b. Virginia) and Matilda Long (b. Wise County, Virginia), the informant as Mrs. Conley of Manco, Kentucky, and the burial place as Van Lear, Kentucky.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website shows that Newt Conley lived from 1885 to 1923, and was buried in Hager-Stafford Cemetery in Hager Hill.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, I. N. Conley died December 7, 1925 [mistake] in Pike County at the age of 44.

According to her death certificate, Eliza Ellen Litteral Conley died February 7, 1956 in King's Daughters Hospital in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, from arterioscleratic cardio vaascular disease, arterioscleroses, and diabetes. Also on this certificate, her birthplace is listed as Oil Springs, Kentucky, her birth date as August 29, 1879, her marital status as widowed, her parents as William Litteral and Matilda Stanley, the informant as E. T. Conley, and the burial place as Hart Cemetery in Ashland.

Information found on findagrave.com and a photo of her headstone shows that Eliza Conley lived from 1880 to 1956, and was buried in Hart Cemetery in Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Eliza E. Conley died February 7, 1956 in Boyd County at the age of 76. She was living in Boyd County at the time of her death.

On page 15 of the 1900 census for District 37 (Abbott) in Floyd County, Kentucky (dated June 9, 1900), William Litteral is listed as the head of the household for house #119, he's a farmer, born in February of 1865 in Kentucky, parents born in Kentucky, married for 17 years, and he's 35 years old. Also listed are Matilda (wife, born in May of 1870 in Virginia, parents born in Virginia, married for 17 years, she's given birth to 8 children and 5 are still living, age 30), Eliza (daughter, born in August of 1885 in Kentucky, age 14), Sarah (daughter, born in December of 1888 in Kentucky, age 11), Allice (daughter, born in March of 1891 in Kentucky, age 9), Elizabeth (daughter, born in March of 1893 in Kentucky, age 7), and Boyd (son, born in March of 1898 in Kentucky, age 2).

Notes: From the research of descendant Bethel McFarland Thielsen: "We were told he paid a neighbor or brother to take his place in the Civil War, as he was married and had a family. This was sometimes done, and for this he paid either $300 or $500. His death was due to an injury he received in a round horse drawn grinder or threasher. His ribs were broken loose from his rib cage, did not heal properly and drained for the 3 years that he suffered. Susan Barrows Adkins was papering in her home in Wis., stopped to prepare dinner and accidently cut her finger. She died as a result of blood poisoning due to the dye in the paper.

"Cora Ellen Adkins said the Adkins were Kentucky Yankees of Southern origin."

He was found to be 6 feet 2 inches tall, he weighed 176 pounds, and he had gray eyes, brown hair, and a ruddy complexion.

Information found on findagrave.com shows that Eva and Hiram Montgomery were both buried in Little Mound Cemetery in Richmond Dale, Ross County, Ohio. No headstone photos are provided.

It has been reported that the father of Dora Conley's children was John Bennett Conley. On page 83 of The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky, it says that J. Bennett Conley was the father of Tressie Conley, but her mother isn't mentioned. Gaby's name isn't listed as his daughter, though.

It appears as though Billie Blankenship might be the daughter of Nancy Jane Howington, Carl Howington's aunt. This is purely a guess, but everything fits into place.

She married SHERMAN B. RICE, son of NANCY CATHERINE SALYER and JAMES RICE, January 25, 1895 in Salyersville, Magoffin County, Kentucky. He was born July 24, 1873 in Johnson County, Kentucky, died February 5, 1947 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, and is buried in Blanton Cemetery in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky. They were divorced between 1920 and 1923. Sherman Rice married (2) NORA SAYLOR, daughter of MATHEW SAYLOR and MARY FRANCES MCGUIRE, about 1923. She was born October 27, 1904 in Kentucky, died May 01, 1979, and is buried in Blanton Cemetery in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky.

According to Kentucky marriage record transcripts, Hulda Conley married Sherman Rice on January 25, 1895 in Magoffin County at the home of H. J. Conley. The witnesses were Charles J. Wheeler and F. H. Adkins, and the minister was Nehemiah Crace.

When Sherman B. Rice's World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918 in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky, he stated that he was a self-employed farmer in Ballot, Johnson County, that his closest relative was Hulda Rice of Ballot, and that he was born July 24, 1872. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had brown eyes and dark-colored hair.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website shows that Sherman Rice lived from January 28, 1867 to February 5, 1947, and was buried in Blanton Cemetery in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, and that Nora Rice lived from October 27, 1904 to May 1, 1979, and was buried in the same cemetery. Nora's father and her son, Henry, were also buried in this cemetery. They mistake Sherman for the Sherman Rice who lived from 1867 to 1947, and was buried in Sherman Rice Cemetery. No headstone photos are provided for the Blanton Cemetery, although it says that Sherman and Nora share a headstone.

According to her death certificate, Hulda Catherine Conley died March March 3, 1925 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, from a cerebral hemorrhage. Also on this certificate, her birth date is listed as March 3, 1877, her marital status as divorced, her occupation as "Invalid," her father as Jackson Conley (b. Kentucky), and the doctor as Grant Rice [Ulysses Grant Rice]. There's something wrong with the dates on this certificate. Her birth and death dates are both listed as March 3rd, but her age is 48 years 8 months, the date that the doctor signed the certificate was April 27th, and it was filed on June 9th. Also, "DELAY" has been stamped on it.

According to his death certificate, Sherman B. Rice died February 5, 1947 in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky, from a cerebral hemorrhage. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Johnson County, his birth date as July 24, 1873, his marital status as married, his wife as Nora Rice (age 50), his parents as James Rice (b. Johnson County, Kentucky) and Nancy Salyer (b. Magoffin County, Kentucky), the informant as Nora Rice of Oil Springs, Kentucky, and the burial place as Oil Springs.

According to Kentucky death record transcripts, Sherman B. Rice died February 5, 1947 in Johnson County at the age of 73. He was living in Johnson County at the time of his death.
