ELIZABETH CONLEY, daughter of HENRY CONNELLY JR. and SARAH PHILLIPS, was born January 20, 1812 in Floyd County, Kentucky, died May 25, 1897, and is buried in the Towles Cemetery in Wayne Township, Lake County, South Dakota. She married JOSEPH ADKINS, April 22, 1832 in Morgan County, Kentucky.

Notes: It's possible that Elizabeth Conley and her brother John were twins. They married Joseph Adkins and Rachel Adkins who were brother-sister. According to the book "The Conley Clan of Eastern Kentucky," published and sold by The Magoffin County Historical Society, they were married four days apart, but it has also been reported that they were married on the same day, April 22, 1832.

Sometime around 1844, shortly after her parents moved to Wisconsin, Elizabeth and Joseph decided to move there as well. It was around this time that Joseph died, and Elizabeth decided to go ahead and take her family "out west." She died on May 25, 1897, and her tombstone reads: "I Go The Way of All The Earth."

From the research of descendant Bethel McFarland Thielsen: "When Joseph Adkins, freed his slaves in Carter Co., Ky. to put an end to slavery (abolition movement 1834-1840) he was forced to flee in the night, so he wouldn't be lynched. For his safety, he traveled at night and rested during the daytime. He left Ky. after telling George, the eldest, what to take, and what to pack in two wagons, one to be canvas covered and to trail the two milk cows. The six young children, George and his mother, were to go to a colony of migrators in Ohio and he would find them. After two weeks preperation, they were ready to travel, meet their father, and go on to Grant Co., Wis. Later they moved to Iowa but because of two years drought, moved back to Wis. again, where they lived out their lives."

On page 117 of the 1850 census for District 24 in Grant County, Wisconsin (dated August 14, 1850), Elizabeth Atkins is listed as the head of the household for house #259, she's not working, born in Kentucky, and she's 37 years old. Also listed are George (farmer, born in Kentucky, age 17), John (born in Kentucky, age 15), John (born in Kentucky, age 15), Enoch (born in Kentucky, age 13), Francis M. (born in Kentucky, age 11), Louisa (born in Kentucky, age 10), and Louis (born in Kentucky, age 8).

On page 7 of the 1860 census for Fennimore in Grant County, Wisconsin (dated June 28, 1860), Elizabeth Adkins is listed as the head of the household for house #277, no occupation is listed, she's born in Kentucky, and 47 years old. Also listed are Enoch (farmer, born in Kentucky, age 21), Franklin M. (farmer, born in Kentucky, age 20), and Louis (born in Kentucky, age 15). They are living next to son John.

On page 14 of the 1870 census for Woodman in Grant County, Wisconsin (dated June 25, 1870), Elizabeth is found living with her son. Lewis Adkins is listed as the head of the household for house #100, he's a merchant, born in Kentucky, and he's 25 years old. Also listed is Elizabeth (born in Kentucky, age 59).
