He spent many years of his life traveling the world while working in the oilfield industry. His final travel destination was Heaven and he departed on Feb. 8, 2010 from Tehachapi, Calif. via COPD at the age of 72. Upon arrival Charlie was joyfully greeted at the gate by his parents, Lester and Bessie, his sisters Cora and Sissy, and various other family and friends.
"Charlie was a smart, generous, spiritually strong, resourceful man, and an example to all of us. His wife and family meant everything to him. They were at the forefront of his heart with every endeavor. He will be missed. Forevermore we’ll reminisce over his impact on our lives while he was here, and tears will fall in tribute to his memory and our sorrow at his passing. His life was our family’s history in the making and a roadmap for our future generations.
"There are a million anecdotes that could be written here by his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends. Sadly we must write the short version. Charlie lived life and loved to the fullest. His family moved from Oklahoma to California when he was a child. He loved sports and ran track for Shafter High School, where he graduated in 1956.
"He married Joyce in 1958 and thought of her as the most wonderful woman in the world. He raised his family in Wasco and moved to Tehachapi 10 years ago. He enjoyed music and taught his daughter to dance before she could walk. He was involved in every sport his son participated in as a fan, mentor, and sometimes coach.
"He coached his grandchildren in t-ball and baseball. He educated his granddaughters on the 'right' way to fry eggs and was an example of the type of man they might one day marry. He taught his grandsons how to fish, shoot, and the importance of respect and opening a door for a lady. He traveled the world and worked hard. He started a family tradition of neighborhood BBQ’s during his time off from work and travel. This tradition is carried on by his son, grandchildren, and many friends. He was quick-witted. He loved his country, he was proud to be an American and considered himself a modern Patriot.
"The world has lost a loving, hard-working family man and friend to many. He is survived by Joyce, the wife he loved beyond measure for over 52 years, and their children, a daughter Tanya, a son Sheldon and daughter-in-law Dana of Tehachapi, California. "The son of a tenant farmer and coal miner, Odell was the third of eight children. He was born on a typically hot July day in 1922. He graduated from Panama High School in 1941, and inherited a world at war. After a short stint with the Civilian Conservation Corps, he enlisted with the U.S. Navy on Sept. 11, 1941. As with most who served during this time, Odell simply say this as his duty and honor to served his country. He knew what he had to do, and took up the mantle of this responsibility just like his father had done in the first World War and his grandfather had done in the Civil War. Returning home after the war, Odell started life over again just up the road from his boyhood home in the town of Bokoshe. Realizing the road to his future would be paved with the bricks and mortar of education, he began this new journey at Eastern Oklahoma A&M. He graduated there in 1949 and continued on at Northeastern State University where he finished his undergraduate work in 1951 with a bachelors degree in education. It was then on to Oklahoma University where he completed his masters program in school administration in 1956. It was also during this time he met and married a young lady named Mary Alice Condo, the daughter of a rancher from a neighboring town. They were married on Nov. 23, 1949 and set out building a life together raising two sons. Eventually they settled in the town of Bixby where he would spend the next twenty-five years working as a school principal and retired from Bixby Public Schools as an assistant superintendent. An avid reader, Odell devoured book after book and kept the local librarian busy keeping the newest best sellers available. Odell was also a closet philanthropist - finding people in need and meeting those needs, without fan fare or publicity. He never sought out the accolades or applause from others. He simply knew that his reward came from a higher authority; one that would not succumb to the ravages of time. A reward that he knew awaited him in the future and he is now enjoying today. Odell also enjoyed many outdoor activities. Hunting and fishing as a young man and spending time at the lake with his family and friends as he grew older were the things in which he found his greatest pleasure. These times with his family and his closest friends brought great joy to his life and to ours.
"He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary on February 10, 1988 as well as by 4 brothers; Leon, Roy, D.E. & Kenneth Hood and 1 sister; Madge."
