She was born March 27, 1902 in Johnson County, Kentucky, died March 26, 1978 in Wurtland, Greenup County, Kentucky, and is buried in McCarty Cemetery in Oil Springs, Johnson County, Kentucky.

Notes: When Gratz McCarty died in 1935 his obituary stated that he had 6 children. When his wife died in 1978 her obituary stated that her children were Hetsel, David, Branche, Jenny [Junie], Rouie, and Faye. There was a Cecil L. McCarty who was born in 1923 in Johnson County to a Neva Lemaster, and there is a child that age in the 1930 census, but his name is James. When Hetzel died he had 2 surviving brothers, Dave and Branche, and 2 sisters, Rouie and Faye. It's going to be assumed here that James, Branche, and Cecil are the same person.

He was found to be tall, of medium build, and he had light brown eyes and light brown hair.

According to his death certificate, Grats McCarty died March 27, 1935 in Low Gap, Johnson County, Kentucky from tuberculosis. Also on this certificate, his birthplace is listed as Johnson County, his birth date as February 17, 1896, his marital status as married his wife as Gladys McCarty, his occupation as farmer, his parents as James McCarty (b. Johnson County) and Elizabeth Cantrell (b. Johnson County), the informant as Alonzo Reed of Manila, Kentucky, and the burial place as McCarty Cemetery in Manila.

The victim [sic], were Ford McCarty, 32, of this city, and Harless Edward Compton, 25, of Belcher, Pike County, Kentucky. McCarty's body was found about six o'clock on the morning of July 5 on the Pigeon Road (Ky 1409) about one- half mile from Oil Springs by local residents. State Tropper Jack Music said he had been thrown out of the 1948 Dodge sedan as the car left the road and plunged over an embankment about 300 feet. He said the vehicle rolled on the victim, probably killing him instantly. Trooper Music said the victim apparently lost control of the vehicle on a curve near the scene of the accident and that his death occured about 9:30 on the previous evening. Mr. McCarty, a truck driver for McGahan Feed Company, was the son of Halleek and Nora Curtis McCarty of the low Gap vicinity. He was born May 25, 1926. Surviving are his wife, Alma Fairchild McCarty, two young sons, James and Roger, and a daughter Linda Faye, all at home, and the following brothers and sisters, Walter McCarty, Springfield , Ohio, Burl McCarty, Staffordsville, Joe McCarty, Low Gap, Mary Ward, Meally, and Maxie McCarty and Helen McCarty both of Low Gap. Funeral srevices were held at 10:00 a.m., July 7, at the home of his parnets [sic] by the Rev. Lonna Reed and Rev. Oscar McCarty. Burial was in the family cemetery." Thomas, died June 2, 1954, and a daughter, Verna Thomas died April 18, 1928. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 30, at the Bethel United Baptist Church at Flat Gap. Officiating will be Rev. Tommie Bailey and Rev. H.T. Hamilton.
