Cantrell, 73, of Pikeville, died at 8:21 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia, after a brief illness. George was born in Johnson County, Kentucky, Feb. 26, 1942, the son of the late Chloe Cantrell and Berdie Hamilton Cantrell. George was a graduate of Pikeville High School, later going on to graduate from Pikeville College. He taught at Phelps High School while he was waiting to enter the United States Air Force. George wanted to be a pilot but a problem with his eyes prevented that from coming true. He then entered the Air Force in the finance department. George and Christine lived in Ohio and while in Ohio he and some friends started a Hot Air Balloon Club, although he never wanted Christine and himself to go up together — 'Just in case.' Later they moved to New Mexico where he was an assistant manager at Scott’s Lumber in 1992. They also lived in Florida for several years. He and Christine moved to Christine’s homeplace on Brushy Creek where they resided for 21 years. In 2013 they decided that a move to George’s homeplace on Chloe would be in their best interest. When they decided to come back to Kentucky, George got a job at Lowe’s of Pikeville, as an assistant manager. If you went to George for a tool or a nut or bolt, you more than likely came out with what you needed. George had a love for animals, whether they be healthy or not, he tried to feed and see to it they had a vet’s care. His animals were always tagged. I remember a dog that someone set out at his home and it had three legs — the missing leg looked like it was butchered off and sewn with some kind of cheap thread. He and Christine took it to the vet and had it cared for as well as many other animals. George also loved photography, one of his proud pictures was a mama opossum carrying seven babies on her back going through his backyard. The camera was on the table and he shot the picture. He submitted his prize picture to National Geographic, where he was a member and shared pictures with other photographers from all over the world. Whether a picture of a bug, bird, flowers, snow, even a snake in a tree, he could capture its beauty. He was the family photographer until they moved and he gave it over to the rest of us and now we seldom see any pics. He not only took pics but developed them and either delivered them or would mail them. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Ulis Cantrell of Columbus, Ohio; and one sister, Plina Voight of Pikeville. George is survived by his wife of 48 years, Christine Lowe Cantrell; one brother, Vernon Cantrell of Pikeville; and a special cousin, Georgia Syck of Pikeville. A memorial service will be held at Piso Freewill Baptist Church on Right Fork of Brushy on Saturday, April 4, 2015, at 11 a.m., with Bro. William Maynard officiating. George will be laid to rest at the Veterans Cemetery in Nicholasville, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, donations can be make to the Pikeville County Animal Shelter, 510 Lykins Creek, Pikeville, Ky. 41501."
