Notes: From Wikipedia.org:

"Benjamin Franklin Stapleton (November 12, 1869 - May 23, 1950) was the Mayor of Denver, Colorado for two periods (comprising five terms), the first from 1923-1931 and the second from 1935-1947. He also served as the Democratic Colorado State Auditor from 1933-1935.

"He was born November 12, 1869 in Paintsville, Kentucky. He attended National Normal University in Lebanon, Ohio, graduating with a law degree. Early in the 1890s, Stapleton went to live in Denver, and in 1899, he was admitted to the Colorado Bar.

"Stapleton enlisted for service in the Spanish-American War. He served with the First Colorado Regiment, Company 1, Colorado Volunteers Infantry in the Philippine Islands, rising to the rank of first sergeant.

"At the conclusion of his war-time service, Stapleton returned to Denver to practice law and first became actively interested in politics, helping fount the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

"On June 21, 1917, Stapleton married Mabel Freeland, with whome he had two children, Lois Jane and Benjamin, Junior.

"Stapleton's political career began in 1904 as a police magistrate, where he remained until 1915, when President Woodrow Wilson appointed him postmaster. During his appointment, he oversaw the completion of the Denver Post Office building. After a brief stint in private law practice following his resignation in 1921, Stapleton defeated Dewey C. Bailey in Denver's mayoral election in 1923 and was re-elected in 1927.

"In 1932, Stapleton won election to the post of state auditor. Unsatisfied, Stapleton decided in 1935 to campaign for mayor once again. That year he won, and so the next two races in 1939 and 1943.

"Stapleton was responsible for many civic improvements during his five terms as mayor of Denver. Most projects attributed to Stapleton were during his second term as mayor when he had access to funds and manpower from the New Deal. During this time, he saw through the creation of the Denver Civic Center and the Denver Municipal Airport, and the considerable expansion of Denver Mountain Parks system, including the Amphitheatre at Red Rocks Park.

"The construction of Denver Municipal Airport was begun in early 1929 and completed that same year. Its grand opening celebration took place over four days from October 17–20 – a week before the stock market crashed. It was widely viewed at the time as a huge boondoggle. Stapleton was excoriated as either corrupt or incompetent, or both, for having the taxpayers subsidize a mere plaything of the wealthy; what the Denver Post sneeringly dubbed "Stapleton's Folly", and others jokingly called "Rattlesnake Hollow". It was viewed by some as too far from civilization to be practicable. Others pointed out the close relationship Stapleton seemed to have with land-owning political backers who stood to benefit, conspicuous among them H. Brown Canon of Windsor Farm Dairy. These suspicions were a factor in his loss in the 1931 mayoral election to George D. Begole. The airport was later renamed Stapleton International Airport on August 25, 1944 in his honor. Today, the airport no longer exists, replaced by a neighborhood, also named Stapleton, and Stapleton Street continues to bear his name.

"In 1935 Stapleton appointed George Cranmer, a wealthy former stock broker, as manager of Improvements and Parks. Cranmer had luckily pulled his assets out of the stock market just a year before the crash of 1929. The two, as it turned out, had completely different visions for what to do with a particularly striking locale at Red Rocks Park.

"Some time before his appointment, while pondering a boulder field that was surmounted by large projecting rocks on either side, the thoughts of George Cranmer drifted to a memory of something he had once seen while on tour in Sicily: an ancient Greek open-air theater with stone seating. He began to envision something similar, yet unique, for this location.

"Whereas, however, Cranmer dreamt of clearing a starry-skied stage, Stapleton saw the boulders strewn there as the members of a naturally-formed, one-of-a-kind 'rock garden', and wanted them preserved.

"Unbeknown to Stapleton, Cranmer was attempting to persuade the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to quietly go ahead with plans to demolish the rocks with dynamite. He was successful in this, and the rocks were indeed razed. With Stapleton's rock garden no more, the process was begun of hiring architects to design and oversee the eventual building of what is now Red Rocks Amphitheatre.

"Other projects under Stapleton's watch include Denver's water system and the Valley Highway project.

"Stapleton's career in politics finally ended when he lost his 1947 mayoral re-election bid to James Quigg Newton.

"After leaving office, it was uncovered that Stapleton had ties to the Ku Klux Klan, from which he had enjoyed considerable influence in return for its electoral support. This association continues to overshadow his notable contributions to Denver's economic and cultural institutions.

"Stapleton died on May 23, 1950 at his home in Denver."

She was born December 11, 1883 in Kentucky, and died October 3, 1936 in Lewiston, Nez Perce County, Idaho.

Notes: Jesse Stafford's obituary:

"Considerably more than one hundred years ago, while the United States was still a young nation, fate and circumstances brought together two young people, a girl named Colista Knott who was born in New York State, and John Stafford, a Virginian. Both of good old pioneer stock, they were each fine young folk. The story as to how they met is not now to be repeated, but it was quite a romantic meeting and match as they became attached to each other and were married. To this union were born twelve children, of whom Jesse Stafford, later known to his many friends here in Paintsville and Johnson County as 'Uncle Jess,' was the youngest. As he had a son Jesse he was known also as Jesse Stafford, Sr. Born in 1848, while the gold rush was on to California, when Zachary Taylor was President, and while there were then only 27 states in our nation Jesse Stafford was a child when the country around Paintsville was much different than now. EH [sic] has been blessed with a long life and he had the opportunity to live while and when things were here practically as they were in the Revolutionary days, and he continued a very active and industrious life through the changing times and lived to witness astounding changes. His Father John Stafford lived in the vicinity of Paintsville long before Johnson County was organized and Jesse Stafford knew Paintsville as a tiny village in those days, yet lived to see a fine and modern little city. And during those years the work he did helped to make the country what it is today, and he sure did his part, as he was from youth a very active and energetic man. And the friends he made. Numbers and numbers of fine old pioneer settlers he knew, dealt with and loved and none of them were ever heard to say but what Jess's word was his bond and he was therefore highly respected and loved as a good citizen and an honest industrious man. His philosophy of life covered the facts that he believed in the people of this country; he believed in the future growth and development of the country from early in his life and he believed any young man who would be industrious and honest had as good a chance here as elsewhere and could make a living. He followed out this line of belief and action and steadfastly continued in the same until the very day of his death, which occurred at his home in Paintsville, Thursday, May 9, 1935. Jesse Stafford was a man of profound faith and conviction in respect to these and other fundamental principles of life and he fully believed in his opinions and convictions, although always expressing the belief that others ad equal right to their opinions. He expressed himself fortunate in two special factors in his life which he always said meant his success and his salvation. One was that he met and married George Ann Turner on the 1st day of November 1868, and with whom he live in great felicity for more than 66 years. They never in that time spent an anniversary of their wedding day apart. The other great thing for which he was especially proud was the fact that about 60 years ago while still in his youth he joined the Christian Church. He was proud of the fact that he had what he thought to be the best people to live among a large family of children who he always loved and said were good to him, all inalterable Christian faith, and the best wife in the world, and growing and expanding opportunities to make a living. These things eh maintained were enough to make any man happy and to prepare him for heaven. So he grew up here, married here, worked here and lived here busy, active and happy until the very last hour of his life, for he was talking with friends and attending to business up to within two house of his death. He died peacefully on Thursday May 9, 1935, aged 85 years, four months and ten days, leaving those to mourn him his aged and much loved, and highly respected widow George Ann Stafford, who is of he same high order and holds the same high ideals of life as her husband who has gone before. In her hour of extremity and sorrow and irreparable loss, she is sustained by her unalterable and staunch faith that they will meet again. And she says may it be soon, God's will be done. The host of good friends gathered with hearts full of love bringing beautiful tokens of flowers and the funeral services were splendidly conducted by the good man his pastor, John Stambaugh. All the children were present excepting Mrs. Flora Swetnam, who is in New Mexico, and was not physically able to make the long trip and Mrs. Clara Stapleton, who lives in Idaho and the distance being too far to allow of her timely arrival. All the children are W. H. Stafford, Huntington, W. Va. , Harry G. Stafford, Jesse Stafford, Jr., and Ralph Stafford of Paintsville; Rosa Spradlin, Volga, Ky; Flora Swetnam of New Mexico.; Beatrice Grisby of Sardis, Ky.; Mollie Litman, Catlettsburg, Ky.; Clara Stapleton, Nez Perece, Idaho, Tow of the children, Louisa and Calista died when very young. Funeral services were held in the Christian Church of Paintsville and burial was in the family cemetery at Staffordsville."
