Ernie Merle Fairchild, affectionately known by everyone as “Grandma Ernie,” peacefully passed away Dec. 7, 2015, at the age of 97.
Ernie was born Jan. 11, 1918, in Kentucky to Edward and Mary Jane Cox. On Feb. 15, 1937, she married her sweetheart, James Fairchild. Together they had four children: Larry, Robert, Beverly Sue and Sandy. In her later years, she was adopted by two special friends, Ramon Franco and Maria Perez, who lovingly watched over her after her husband of 51 years passed away in 1988. She loved them both like her own children.
Grandma Ernie loved people. She would light up with that beautiful smile anytime anyone came to visit. She had a way of making everyone feel loved. Grandma loved gardening and flowers. She had quite a green thumb. We always had a garden and a yard full of beautiful flowers. Ernie also had a way with animals. She really loved her pets and they loved her. In her later years, her very best buddy was a little cocker spaniel named Roxie. They faithfully watched over each other.
When Grandma was around 90, she was employed by SunPumps as its official paper-wadding expert. We shipped many a package securely wrapped with her packing material.
The family will always be grateful to Ramon, Maria and her grandson, David Fairchild, for all the love and support they were to Grandma in her later years. We are also grateful for all the kind people at the Care Center and their many acts of kindness.
Grandma Ernie will be remembered for her beautiful smile, for her kindness and the deep gratitude she always expressed when anyone helped her.
She is survived by: her two daughters, Beverly Sue Conner and Sandy Allen; her eight grandchildren, Elaine Thomas, Misty Tolson, Chris, Jeff and David Fairchild, Gina Couillard, Michael Conner and Stacy Karkula; and her 20 great-grandchildren.
