When Herbert Wells' World War I draft registration card was filled out on September 12, 1918, he stated that he was a coal miner for a Borderland Coal Company in Borderland, Pike County, Kentucky, that he was living in Boons Camp, Johnson County, Kentucky, that his closest relative was Ella Wells of Boons Camp, and that his he was born March 9, 1898. He was found to be of medium height and build, and he had gray eyes and black hair.

Information found on the Johnson County Historical Society's website and a photo of their headstone shows that Ella Wells lived from 1895 to 1974, and was buried in Wells-Fields Cemetery in Boons Camp, Johnson County, Kentucky, and that Herbert Dennis Wells lived from 1898 to 1974, and was buried in the same cemetery. All of their children are buried there as well.
